Exit polls predict a Congress rout in JK!
5/13/2014 11:51:00 PM

Kunal Shrivatsa
JAMMU, May 13: With almost all the exit polls aired on different Television News Channels on Monday predicting two to three seats to Bharatiya Janta Party and none to Congress in J&K, the grand old party of the country is facing an imminent rout in the northern most states of the country.
While the exit poll of ABP-Nielsen has given two seats each to BJP and Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP), it has projected one seat apiece for the National Conference (NC) and an independent out of the six Lok Sabha seats of the state.
The ABP-Nielsen survey's projections thus means that the Congress shall draw a blank in the two parliamentary constituencies of Jammu-Poonch and Udhampur-Doda which it contested in alliance with the NC and the seats which are being occupied by it since the last two General Elections of 2004 and 2009.
Now, if the figures projected by the India TV-C Voter are taken into account, then the BJP is poised to bag three seats and NC could romp home two while the PDP is expected to win one seat in the state. In this exit poll, the Congress is again shown to be heading for a disaster in J&K as not even a single seat was projected for the party. Under such a scenario, the sitting Congress MP from Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha seat Madan Lal Sharma and party stalwart Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad from Udhampur-Doda parliamentary constituency are staring at a certain defeat as far as the exit polls suggest. If the results of exit polls could give sleepless nights to the rank and file of the Congress, the positive forecasts by different TV news channels in favour of BJP, is a huge reason to smile for the likes of Jugal Kishore Sharma and Jitendra Singh, who are first time contestants for a LS election.
As the majority of the pollsters predicted two to three seats for saffron party in the state, the picture emerging in Jammu region for BJP in Jammu-Poonch and Udhampur-Doda LS constituencies roughly indicates that the BJP nominee from Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha seat Jitendra Singh is winning over his arch rival Ghulam Nabi Azad, the old war horse of Congress.
While such a result could put a big question mark over Azad's future political career, it could open new avenues for Jitender, whose possible winning performance, as per poll predictions, could easily give him a tag of 'giant killer' in this election.
However, the Congress party could take a solace from the Times Now-ORG survey where the party is shown to have put up an impressive show in the state in partnership with the NC as this channel has projected a win on five seats for the alliance while one seat has gone to BJP's account.
