| Highway connecting Ladakh with Kashmir again closed | | | | Srinagar, May 13 : The national highway, connecting the Ladakh region with the rest of the state, has been closed yet again due to landslides and slippery road conditions. Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, remained stranded at Sonamarg and Drass. One-way traffic for light vehicles on the highway was resumed on Sunday after remaining closed for more than five months due to accumulation of heavy snow between Sonamarg to Meenmarg, including Zojilla. Hundreds of vehicles which had left Srinagar for Kargil on Sunday remained stranded at Sonamarg as they could not cross the Zojila before the deadline set by the authorities. However, majority vehicles which had left Kargil yesterday arrived here before the highway was closed yet again. According to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Traffic, in view of inclement weather and the fact that the road condition has deteriorated, no kind of vehicular traffic shall be allowed from Sonamarg to Kargil and vice versa till further orders. As per the communique road reccee shall be carried out when the weather and road condition improves and further decision taken accordingly. As such all the concerned Truck and Load Carrier Unions are informed to advise the drivers of their unions to desist from proceeding towards Sonamarg. |
