Early Times Report

RAJOURI, May 13 : The inhabitants of Rajouri district are facing an acute shortage of safe drinking water thanks to the ill planning by the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Depart-ment's engineers and its mostly failed Water Supply Schemes which have created innumerable difficulties for the locals. In most of the areas including areas in the vicinity of Rajouri city (district headquarter) people have been forced to collect drinking water either from hand pumps or from natural sources after covering a distance of 1 to 4 kilometers.
Inhabitants of Rajouri city are also facing the same problem and getting water supply after a gap of three days in almost all the17 wards. Manohar Lal, Surinder Kumar, Nabid, Mohd Akra , Mohd Iqbal, Manzoor Ahmed and many others, all residents of various wards, said that the years old Water Filtration plant at Danidhar is in dilapidated condition adding that the department is supplying dirty and contaminated water. "People in various wards of the city have been suffering from various water born diseases. The matter was several times taken up with the PHE officials but it seems that they are in deep slumber and have been waiting for an epidemic to spread," said Yogesh Sharma, former BJP district president. People in Nowshera tehsil also complain about the acute shortage of drinking water and were apprehending more scarcity during approaching hot months of June, July & August. Almost all the senior officers of the department (PHE) including Executive Engineers, Assistant Executive Engineers AEEs, AEs and JEs having the same repeated excuses included broken pipes, damaged pipes during widening of the roads by GREF, defected water lifting motors. But nobody talk about failed, ill planned Water Supply Schemes and some of them only exist on papers. Few years ago during the Chief Ministership of Ghulam Nabi Azad a detailed investigation was started into the PHEs Water Supply Schemes in the district but it was stopped when maximum schemes were found exist only on the papers and to save the blue eyed officials of PHE/contractors the investigation was stopped by the government which was conducted by the police under the supervision of SSP. Inhabitants of Thanamandi, Darhal, Sund-erbani, Kotranka, Man-jakot and other tehsils have also been facing the acute shortage of drinking water and have several times blocked the Rajouri-Poonch-Jammu roads in protests.
But except hollow promises the officials of PHE others have failed miserably to provide safe drinking water to the people of Rajouri district.
