| Bubbling 'betting' market functions under nose of police in Srinagar | | People deceived in name of lottery | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, June 1: Srinagar is probably the only city in the country where an illegal betting market running into lakhs of rupees on daily basis is operating and that too under the nose of police. Sources told Early Times that the market is robust with people being deceived in the name of lottery. The people who are the brain behind the 'business' claim that draw of lots is carried out at Delhi with the result declared in the dead of the night. "In a lottery system the people buying the lottery tickets are given the proper lottery in lieu of the denomination of the currency they pay. However in this case there is no lottery with the operators assigning a number to the people who pay for a particular number," said sources. Sources said that the number is written on a note-book and it is struck off once the same is written on a piece of paper and then handed over to the person who wishes to have it. In this way different numbers are given to the people with no lottery being handed over to the buyers. "The betting market is bubbling with activities right from the Abi Guzar cross to Amira Kadal. The betting operators have erected chairs and small tables on the pavement on this stretch of Srinagar city and are busy deceiving people in the name of lottery. They give an impression that they are offering lottery system but the truth is that there is no lottery," said sources. Sources said that the betting operators receive Rs 5-10 lakh rupees on daily basis and out of this only one or two prize are given to the people who fall in the trap. It is estimated that the operators earn Rs 25-30 lakh as net profit in a month with minimum of fuss. "The betting operators have made a website wherein they put up the number that wins the first prize followed by the numbers that get second and third prizes respectively. Everything has been managed in a professional manner and there are very few people who doubt their sincerity," said sources. Sources said that the betting has assumed name and fame among the people in the areas with youth getting addicted to this business. They pump hundreds of rupees on daily basis hoping against hope that they would get the prize at the end of the day. Some of the youth have understood that there is no lottery but betting, but still then they are not ready to give it up. "Police is very well aware of this whole business but still then no action whatsoever has been taken against the betting operators. One cannot deny the fact that the police also get their share from the betting operators and as such are keeping mum over the whole issue," said sources. Sources said that lottery business is properly recognized in the other parts of the country, but same is not done in Srinagar. There is no registration of people carrying out lottery business and not to talk of those running the betting business. |
