| Top Lashkar-e-Toiba commander Abu Ukasha killed in encounter | | | Syed Tahir Bukhari
BARAMULLA, June 1: Divisional Commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit got killed in an ongoing encounter at Handwara in north Kashmir's Kupwara district on Sunday. According to senior police official who told Early Times that, "Acting on specific information about militants, police and Special Operation Group (SOG) from Handwara and army's personnel from the 47, 21, and 6 Rashtriya Rifles unit (RR). Government forces swung into action, and soon after that they launched a search operation in Sudal (Magam) village in Handwara during early hours on Sunday morning. The suspected house was effectively cordoned. First contact was established at about 0400 hrs, when the terrorist opened indiscriminate fire on the troops who were in the process of tightening the noose on the terrorist holed up in the animal shed. As such the joint team of forces intensified the searches, the militants hiding in the area opened fire on them. The fire was retaliated ensuing an enraging gunfight between forces and hiding militants. "The militants fired upon the joint operation party triggering a fierce gunfight , during the encounteran LeT militant was killed" Police spokesperson said. The spokesman said, adding the slain militant was later identified as Abu Ukasha Afghani - the divisional commander of the outfit. The slain militant is a top LeT divisional commander and an Afghan national. He was involved in carrying out many terrorist attacks in the past. Subsequently at the site of operation resulted in the recovery of one 9mm Pistol, one magazine with 15 rounds and one matrix sheet. Meanwhile Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh has appreciated the Army and the SOG personnel for the operation which was conducted in a thoroughly professional and surgical manner. The terrorist killed in this operation was the seventh top terrorist commander killed in 2014. However In 2013, 10 top commanders were killed. The approach adopted by Army to track and eliminate leadership of terrorist organizations operating in Kashmir has proved extremely successful and has broken the backbone of tanzeems. It is pertinent to mention here that few days back, two LeT militants, Zubair Ahmad alias Musab and Ishfaq Ahmad Bhat alias Amir, were killed in an encounter in Kulgam Handwara, which is about 75 km from Srinagar. The search operation was going on till last reports came in, the spokesman said. |
