| Leopards kill twenty sheep in Srinagar outskirts | | Locals aghast, demand compensation, protection | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 1: As the natural habitat of wild animals continues to be infiltrated by the human population the wild beasts are now turning towards the human population in search of food and shelter and one such latest example can be cited in the central Kashmir as a group of leopards mauled to death around two dozen sheep in Buchroo village of Budgam which is located in the Srinagar outskirts. According to details available a group of around three leopards attacked a flock of sheep during intervening night of Friday and Saturday in the village. The sheep flock had been gathered by the local shepherds in an open filed as they were planning to move towards upper reaches of Yusmarg within a few days. Abdul Rashid Chopan (Shepherd) said that three leopards attacked his sheep flock at midnight on Friday and this resulted in death of at least two dozen sheep on the spot, injured as many as twenty sheep. He said that he and another associate tried to raise an alarm but all in vain as the leopards had done their job when people came out of their houses. The residents of Buchroo, Baghi Buchroo, Wathoora and its adjoining villages lodged a strong protest on the Srinagar Chadoora road on Saturday and demanded that wild leopards should be immediately killed as they may cause further damage in the area as people believe that leopards may attack the human population as well. |
