| J&K panchayat members sit on dharna for dues of Rs 200 cr | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 1 : Hundreds of panchayat members accompanied by MGNREGA workers today sat on a dharna against the Omar Abdullah government demanding immediate release of dues of labour hired by the Rural Development Department under MGNREGA scheme which has now surpassed more than Rs 200 crore. MGNREGA workers, led by All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference Anil Sharma, staged a sit-in outside the Press Club of Jammu under the banner of Panchayat Conference. The protesters accused the state government of one of the most corrupt regimes in the history of Jammu and Kashmir and this was the reason that the state government has not cleared the dues of the poor labourers who feed their family on meagre amount of just Rs 145 a day. "Omar government has made the Panchayati Raj System a mockery, everyday the innocent daily wagers whose dues are not cleared by the Rural Development Department are visiting the Panchayat members demanding release of wages but being helpless we are unable to assure them anything," Mr Sharma told reporters. He said the state government is violating the provisions of the MGNREGA Act which calls for release of payment to labourers within 15 days in their bank accounts. The panchayat leader said, "The state government has failed to understand the sufferings and aspirations of the people. The government has failed on all fronts at one side our innocent Panches and Sarpanches are being killed by the militants but neither Chief minister Omar Abdullah nor his Panchayati Raj minister ever interacted with the representatives to address the issue of their security and empowerment. "It is high time, the CM must come out of his comforts and interact with the people on ground to have first hand experience of their grievances and sufferings." |
