Bolt says he can run relays in Glasgow
Kingston (Jamaica): Sprint superstar Usain Bolt has made himself available to run the relays at next month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The 27-year-old was expected to miss the July 23-August 3 showpiece but said in a release Friday that he was keen on participating in the Games, reports CMC.
He is not participating in the weekend`s National Championships, a qualifier for the Games.
“I do not wish to take the place of anyone who qualifies this weekend in an individual event, but am available for relay duties if the selectors feel I can be an asset to the Jamaican team in Glasgow,” Bolt said.
“I have received lots of requests, invitations and messages of support from my fans in Scotland, who are looking forward to a great event.”
Bolt has been hampered by injury in recent months and is yet to make his debut on the international circuit this season.
Earlier this month, he announced he was pulling out of the Golden Spike in Ostrava on June 17 and the Paris Diamond League meet on July 5.
He said he had already conveyed his decision not to run at the National Championships, to the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association.
“I am not ready to compete at the Jamaican Championships this weekend, but I have informed the JAAA that I am available for selection for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and have submitted the relevant documents,” Bolt said.
Bolt, the reigning World and Olympic champion, missed the last Commonwealth Games in India as well as the 2006 edition in Australia.
His appearance in Glasgow will be a massive marketing boost for the Games.
Illness forces Norwegian great Hushovd to retire
Paris: Norwegian cycling legend and former world champion Thor Hushovd announced on Friday he will quit the sport after the world championships in September.
The 36-year-old BMC rider says he has been badly affected after contracting mononucleosis which has often left him drained of energy.
"I felt the virus developing in my body and had some good spells, but it happens that I feel really down and very weak physically and mentally," revealed the 2010 road race world champion.
"I asked myself about continuing and answered `that was enough`."
The burly Hushovd, burst onto the scene in 1998 when he won the junior world championship time-trial race before turning professional with French team Credit Agricole in 2000 where he remained for eight years.
Between 2004 and 2011, he won ten stages on the Tour de France, was the first Norwegian to wear the yellow jersey, and won the green points jersey in 2005 and 2009.
He also won stages on the Giro d`Italia and Vuelta as well as winning the Gent-Wevelgem one day classic in 2006.
Known as the `Bull` or `Viking`, Hushovd was also a double national champion in both the Norwegian championship road race and time-trial.
After leaving Credit Agricole, he had spells with Cervelo and Garmin before finishing with current team BMC.
Oscar Pistorius' psychiatrist suffer hearts attack
Pretoria: One of the three psychiatrists who assessed Oscar Pistorius was hospitalised on Thursday after allegedly suffering a heart-attack just days before the Paralympian`s murder trial resumes, South African media said Friday.
"I believe he was hospitalised last night," Pistorius lawyer Brian Webber, told the domestic SAPA news agency. "But I think he is already at home."
The illness is, however, unlikely to delay the re-opening of the trial due on Monday with prosecution and judiciary officials saying the case would proceed as scheduled.
Nathi Mncube of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) told AFP the case will "most certainly" resume on Monday, he said.
Lulama Luti, the judiciary spokesman also said the case would go ahead as planned.
After a six-week break, Pistorius is due back in court on Monday where a report on the athlete`s mental state is expected to be submitted, following his month-long stint under psychiatric evaluation.
Judge Thokozile Masipa had ordered last month that he spends 30-days under psychiatric observation to determine if he should be held criminally responsible for the Valentine`s Day shooting of his girlfriend.
This was after Pistorius appeared to change his defence when he brought in an expert witness who said the star sprinter suffers from "generalised anxiety disorder," a condition that could have contributed to him shooting Reeva Steenkamp.
The 27-year-old had initially told the court he shot Steenkamp with a 9mm pistol through a locked toilet door by mistake, believing she was an intruder coming to attack him in the dead of the night.
The outcome of his assessment may drastically alter the direction of the trial, with media reports suggesting that the three specialists who monitored him had come to a "unanimous" conclusion about his state of mind.
Boxing India gets 26 state units' support, elections on July 9
New Delhi: The prolonged mess in the terminated Indian Amateur Boxing Federation is finally showing some signs of resolution with the AIBA-approved Boxing India getting the support 26 state units in a general council meeting today where it was also decided to hold IABF elections on July 9.
The IABF had been suspended in December 2012 before being terminated earlier this year for failing to adhere to the International Boxing Association`s diktat of holding fresh elections and adopting a revamped constitution.
After much deliberation and factional disputes in the IABF, the AIBA decided to recognise Boxing India as the ad-hoc body authorised to call an AGM and conduct elections.
Boxing India comprises CMD of long-time Indian boxing sponsor Monnet Ispat Limited, Sandeep Jajodia, and owner of India`s World Series of Boxing franchise, Udit Sheth. The group was initially being backed by the Maharashtra Boxing Association before getting the support of other units today.
"It was a general council meeting where the group presented its vision for the sport to all the units," a top official told PTI after the meeting in Mumbai.
"It has been decided to hold the elections on July 9. July 1 will be the last date to file nominations and July 4 would be last date to withdraw nominations," he added.
The five-year developmental plan presented by Boxing India included a detailed roadmap for the state associations and the national federation to be formed.
"We have been official sponsors of boxing since 2008 and are committed to this sport for the long term which is why it is heartening to receive the support of most of the State Presidents, who are passionate about boxing and have spent their lives working towards improving the sport in India," said Jajodia, who could be in the fray for IABF President`s post.
"We are determined to create a federation that is not only transparent but inclusive and would welcome the support of all the state associations," said Jajodia.
"We want to implement a strong system that will nurture the dearth of talent in India and permeate to the grassroots of the country. Our proposal has received positive feedback from most of the state associations who are extremely hopeful for a brighter future for boxing," added Sheth.
At this gathering, a formal constitution proposed by Boxing India and approved by AIBA, was also passed.
It was on March 3 that the AIBA Executive Committee decided to terminate India "due to serious violations of the AIBA Statutes and Bylaws".
Following this, it was decided to establish a new National Federation in India with the right group of people who would support the principles of AIBA in terms of ethics and fairness.
For that, AIBA launched an Evaluation Committee to assess all the applications received by potential groups or individuals interested in establishing a new Federation, following which Boxing India was recognised.
However, there was some controversy after that with Indian Olympic Association Secretary General Rajeev Mehta raising objections to the manner in which Boxing India was given recognition.
Hunger for World Cup success rivals Ramadan
Rio de Janeiro: Germany`s Mesut Ozil will not observe Ramadan when it starts from Saturday but many World Cup players who do follow the Muslim fasting month will be under strict medical surveillance.
While Islamic Iran and Bosnia, which has a sizeable Muslim population, have dropped out of the tournament, Algeria has qualified for the last 16 for the first time and they will face a quick Ramadan test on Monday against Ozil`s Germany. Religious authorities in several countries take a pragmatic attitude to football and Ramadan when eating is not allowed during the daylight hours.
In 2008, the Dar al-Ifta, Egypt`s main Islamic body, allowed professional footballers to eat during Ramadan if they were bound by contracts to play during the holy month and they felt that fasting will impact their performance. Other workers involved in "hard labour" are also given a dispensation.
Ozil said he falls into this category. "I can`t take part," said Arsenal`s attacking midfielder who added that the World Cup is "working". "It will be impossible for me to take part this year."
The Algerian team will nearly all be fasting when they battle Germany in Porto Alegre however. The Algerians are using Hakim Chalabi, a sports medicine specialist at the Aspetar clinic in Doha and one of FIFA`s leading experts on fasting footballers. "It is a period when the risk of injury increases, especially in the lower back, the joints and the muscles" said Chalabi. "This is mainly because of dehydration and not the lack of eating." Players can lose up to six litres (11 pints) of fluids during a match.
The expert, a former medical chief at French football giants Paris St Germain, said the level and quality of nutrition had to be changed to cope with exercise during Ramadan. "The players must hydrate themselves better. We also advise them to take a longer siesta during the afternoon to make up for some of the lost sleep." Muslims sleep less at night because of the meal rules.
Taking part in sport in Ramadan is a "major physiological performance penalty", Mark de Marees, director of exercise physiology at the German Sport University in Cologne, told the SID sports news agency, an AFP subsidiary. "If players take no water or food during the day, they can only take part in low levels of physical stress and in significantly different climates without a serious health and performance penalty."
Claude Leroy, who has been a coach for the national teams of Ghana, Cameroon and Oman, said that players who fast would have real troubles in Brazil where a majority of the games start at 1:00pm or 5:00pm. "It is very complicated to strictly follow Ramadan," he said.
Algeria`s captain Majid Bougherra confirmed that drinking enough is the most difficult part of Ramadan. "But we are OK. The climate is good. Some players can delay the fasting. In my case I am going to do it in line with my physical state. But I think I am going to do it."
Religious sensibilities raised by Ramadan also worry some coaches, especially in teams from a mixture of ethnic backgrounds. France`s coach Didier Deschamps said he would be giving no orders to Muslim players in his team, who include midfielder Paul Pogba.
"This is a sensitive and delicate topic," said Deschamps. "I have no order to give. We respect everyone`s religion. The players are used to it, we are not discovering the situation today. I have no worries." Muslims will at least have an easier time in Brazil, where it gets dark at about 5:30pm, than at the London Olympics where the Iftar meal at the end of Ramadan could not be served before 8:30pm or 9:00pm.
Chalabi said there could also be a psychological boost during the fasting month. "Curiously there are some athletes who have better results during Ramadan because they really want to do the fast," said the doctor.
FIFA lifts 90-day ban on German legend Franz Beckenbauer
London: FIFA has lifted the 90-day ban on football activity that the governing body had imposed on German legend Franz Beckenbauer.
Beckenbauer`s manager Marcus Hoefl said that the German legend was told on Friday that his ban had been lifted with immediate effect.
According to the BBC, Beckenbauer had been banned for failing to help an inquiry into alleged corruption in the 2018 Russia and 2022 Qatar World Cup bids. The 68-year-old was part of the FIFA executive committee that made the awards.
Beckenbauer, who lifted the World Cup as both a player in 1974 and manger in 1990, said in a statement that he under-estimated the matter, blaming the fact that such voluminous administrative things are usually dealt with by his management team.
Hoefl said that despite the lifting of the ban, Beckenbauer would not be travelling to the World Cup taking place in Brazil.
Beckenbauer had been asked to co-operate with a FIFA ethics investigation led by American lawyer Michael Garcia, but the governing body said that the German had ignored repeated requests to assist the inquiry.
Beckenbauer, who is now honorary president at Bayern Munich, had maintained that he was sent questions only in complex English and was refused the opportunity to discuss the matter in his native German.
