New Delhi, July 7: The much-awaited elections of Boxing India, the group authorised by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) to run the sport in the country, have been postponed.
The polls were due to be held on July 9 in Mumbai but the group, which is a consortium of corporates and administrators, has decided to call them off.
"Due to certain exigencies and discussions, Boxing India has decided to postpone the elections and will revert post the AIBA EC Meeting that will be held between 15th and 18th July," the group wrote in a mail sent across to the 26 state units, which have decided to back it.
"We will announce fresh dates and process guidelines shortly." Boxing India was handed provisional recognition by AIBA in May after the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation was terminated earlier this year for failing to adhere to the international body`s diktat of holding fresh elections and adopting a revamped constitution.
The group comprises CMD of long-time Indian boxing sponsor Monnet Ispat Limited, Sandeep Jajodia, and owner of India`s World Series of Boxing franchise, Udit Sheth.
Boxing India was initially being backed by the Maharashtra Boxing Association before getting the support of other units.
The IABF was suspended in December 2012 for "possible manipulation" in election, which were held in September that year. After much deliberation and factional disputes in the IABF, the AIBA decided to recognise Boxing India as the ad-hoc body authorised to call an AGM and conduct elections. |
