Commoner suffers as eatables go dearer
7/8/2014 12:14:49 AM
Shakeel A Khan

SRINAGAR, July 7: With the Government in slumber, the commoners continue to suffer as the prices of the eatables have gone sky rocketing. The profiteers openly violate rate lists as approved by the government. In fact these things happen under the nose of the concerned authorities.
It appears as if the authorities have given a license to the butchers, vegetable and fruit vendors as they are busy in the loot of the consumers in the broad day light, that too in the holy month Ramadan.
Buy selling meat 360 per Kg, chicken 120 per kg, the people involved in this trade have put a question mark on the functioning of the authorities. The department of consumer affairs and public distribution has forgotten about its duties as the market checking squads seem to be enjoying shade. The tall claims of the administration that it is doing its best to provide relief to the consumers have proved to be the hollow slogans. As learnt from the reliable sources, the unlawful activities of the profiteers and the hoarders have touched the heights. "This world doesn't belong to poor people like me. The back breaking prices of the commodities have made the life of the people hellish. It is beyond the reach of people like me to buy a Kg of meat at 360," said Gulzar Ahmad from Bemina while talking to Early Times.
Gulzar went on saying that the skyrocketing prices have made lives miserable for the commoners who are already suffering for different reasons. It appears, as per Gulzar, that the authorities have surrendered before these profiteers.
Many customers at Srinagar, who talked to the Early Times, were of the opinion that officials of the concerned department has turned a blind eye towards this fact because they get a healthy share from the business of these profiteers.
These people were of the opinion that the self managed prices of the profiteers have deprived the poor people from taking the fruits which they used to enjoy while breaking the fast. According to these people, the authorities are behaving like the mute spectators as this trade is like a 'Gold mine' for them. Another group of people while sharing their ideas with the Early Times said that many meetings of the concerned officers take place prior to the start of Ramadan or before any festival and statements as per past practice are issued that the hoarders and the profiteers will be severely dealt with, but it never proves to be a practical reality. People say that the job of supervising the markets be assigned to the officers who are dedicated and sincere towards their profession. People suggest that the government must tighten its noose around the profiteers so that the difference is felt on the ground.
