Plateletpheresis starts in GMC Jammu | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 16: Plateletphersis a procedure in which platelets are harvested from single donor has been started in the post graduate department of blood transfusion medicine Government Medical College Jammu. Speaking on the occasion, Head of the Department of blood transfusion medicine GMC Jammu Dr Vijay Sawhney has revealed that in this procedure more than forty thousand platelets can be harvested per procedure while a single unit of platelet concentrate can give only 3000 to 4000 platelets. Patients generally experience bleeding in plateletpherisisonly platelets are collected while rest of the blood components are reinfused back to the donor in the same sitting. The same donor is ready to undergo this procedure after 72 hours should the need arises. Platelets get reduced in patients in number of conditions like blood cancer, chemotherapy for malignancies, drugs intake and certain infections like dengue fever. Reduced platelets are responsible for bleeding manifestations which at times can be fatal. This procedure of apheresis shall be of great help in management of various diseases. |
