Pregnant woman's death sparks protests, DC orders probe | | | Asif Iqbal Naik

Kishtwar, Dec 16: Family members, relatives and locals from Kishtwar today held a protest here and block the National Highway for over six long hours outside DC Office Kishtwar against the death of a 28 year old pregnant woman due alleged medical negligence at District Hospital (DH) Kishtwar. Meanwhile DC Kishtwar has ordered magisterial inquiry by SDM Chatroo Kalyan Singh in the matter. The victim allegedly died due to medical negligence has been identified as Drishla Parihar w/o Shiv Kumar Parihar resident of Tagood Kishtwar. Narrating their woeful tale, family members recalled that the deceased was admitted in District Hospital (DH) Kishtwar for delivery of child yesterday where she died soon after giving birth to a child. "She was very well and sound while entering inside the hospital--she died only due to medical negligence," said wailing Chuni Lal, a relative of the deceased. Criticizing the facilities at the District Hospital, he said that District Hospital (DH) Kishtwar lacks infrastructure as well as services of expert doctors. Another relative of the deceased, Akshay Kumar aggressively said that the death due to negligence of the doctors is a routine matter at this hospital. Citing examples, he said, "Only few days back a lady with fractured leg died on operation table while another women from Sarthal last week also died due to callous approach of the doctors towards the patient care. "I wonder why this hospital has been tagged as District Hospital while it virtually is failing to have facilities as available at Sub District Hospital," said angry Akshay, adding, " there is no ventilator in the hospital, besides acute shortage of specialist doctors in the hospital." Amid sloganeering against medical authorities, the agitating people were demanding immediate suspension of the doctors involved in alleged medical negligence and even refused to perform last rites of dead till the lady doctor will not be suspended. Meanwhile, acting swiftly, Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar Mohammed Javed Khan rushed to the spot did his best to pacify the protestors and assured free and fair probe into the alleged medio-negligence leading to death of lady. It was Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar's initiatives, the agitating people agreed to sit across the table with the hospital administration where in Chief Medical Officer Kishtwar and Medical Superintendent District Hospital Kishtwar put forth their views over the whole episode including treatment to the deceased woman. Meanwhile DC Kishtwar has ordered Magistrate Inquiry to be conducted by SDM Chatroo Kalyan Singh while a board of doctors from Doda led by Chief Medical Officer Doda Dr Yaqoob has also been called to conduct the autopsy of the deceased. However, after completion of all legal formalities, Kishtwar police handed over the dead body to family members for last rites. While talking to 'Early Times' Medical Superintendent District Hospital Kishtwar Dr Parvaiz Iqbal Wani said that the deceased succumbed due to cardiac arrest, added that hospital authorities used all available resources to save the life of the victim. He however expressed his grief over loss of life and expressed its solidarity with the bereaved family. Rejecting the allegations of medio-negligence, he said that team of four doctors were present inside the operation theater, while four more doctors including him also joined in following an emergency call. He said that the victim was recovered after suffering first cardiac attack and died in a ward after nearly two hours of operation when she suffered 2nd heart attack. He said that however the final outcome of the inquiry report to be conducted by the administration will clear all the air regarding the cause that led to unfortunate death of the woman post caesarean. |
