Conference on Education for sustainable development-challenges,opportunities concludes

JAMMU, Dec 16: WWF-India and Centre for Environment Education and Training in collaboration with State Education Department today organized one day Conference on Education for Sustainable Development- Challenges and Opportunities at IIPA Conference Hall.
On the occasion, Secretary School Education Nirmal Sharma was the chief guest while R. A. Inqlabi, Director School Education was the guest of honour. A large number of students of various schools, colleges besides teachers also attended the conference. Mamta Sharma of Environment Sciences welcomed the delegates and guests.
Speaking on the occasion, Secretary School Education said that Government of J&K like rest of the states in India has made Environment Education (EE) a compulsory subject at undergraduate and graduate levels. She said that there is a need to strengthen the institutional arrangement for better implementation of National Green Corps, National Environmental Awareness Campaign, Paryavaran Mitra Handprint and Nature Camp projects of Government of India. She said that we have to lay more stress on training of teachers in EE and improve training curricula of DIETs and B. Ed colleges for training of teachers. She said that such type of training and awareness programmes should be held at district and zonal levels and for which education department will extend all the help to the knowledge partner of GOI.
Dr. C. M. Seth Chairman WWF-India was the key note speaker, while speaking he said that we are in the last year of United Nations Decade for Education for Sustainable Development and this conference is the right time to introspect what we have achieved in last ten years to meet the goals and targets fixed by United Nation under Million Development Goals to make our society and youth to take up the challenges of future environmental issues and building their capacity to rebuild and rediscover their cultural and natural heritage for better and healthy India. During the function best performer National and State Awards were also presented for the year 2014 by the Chief Guest.
