Early Times Report

JAMMU, Dec 16:Commission culture in the State Government and vested interests of a senior officer at the helm of affairs in Mission Udaan dampened the spirit of Government of India's ambitious initiative of providing jobs to unemployed educated youth in Jammu and Kashmir. Less number of candidates than the total job offers, appeared in the mega recruitment drive in Jammu by 25 Corporates of national and international repute- thanks to wrong venue selected for the purpose on insistence of the said officer.
According to the sources in Union Home Ministry, despite repeated requests of the National Skill Development Council (NSDC) for Jammu University to be the venue for organizing this mega recruitment drive, the officer at the helm of affairs in State Planning Department insisted and finally got a three-star hotel in Jammu selected for the event because of his vested interests. NSDC wanted General Zorawar Singh Auditorium of the Jammu University or any other campus for holding the mega recruitment drive on December 15, 16 to ensure participation of maximum students and benefit of the initiative to them. However, a senior officer in the State Planning department, who is heading the Udaan Project in J&K, rejected the suggestion and insisted for a particular three-star hotel in Jammu to be selected as the venue for two-day event, sources explained.
While the selection of expensive venue for recruitment helped the said officer to fetch a handsome amount as commission from the hotel owner, the wrong location severely dampened the spirit of Government of India's initiative of offering training and placement by the country's top corporates to Jammu youth.
For around 2000 jobs being offered by the top corporates participating in the mega drive, hardly one thousand educated unemployed Jammu youth appeared because of wrong venue, said an official of NSDC on the condition of anonymity. Had Jammu University or any other campus of Engineering College been the venue, at least five times candidates would have appeared and got benefitted, the official added and rued the selfish approach of State Government officials at the helm of affairs.
