PM Modi gets it wrong yet again! | | | Kunal Shrivatsa
JAMMU, Dec 16: Attacked by the opposition several times in the past for misrepresentation of facts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi did it again today while addressing a huge public rally at MA Stadium here Tuesday. Addressing a mammoth gathering here in support of BJP candidates from different Assembly constituencies, Modi in his trademark style while launching a scathing attack on Congress termed it as 'Ghuspaithiya' or 'intruder' party in the state of Jammu & Kashmir which always enters into post-poll alliance with either the National Conference (NC) or the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) to grab power adding that Congress never bothers to contest elections in partnership with NC or PDP. However, Modi erred in hitting out at Congress' so called 'opportunism' as he forgot that Congress and NC had stitched a pre-poll alliance way back in 1987 after an accord was reached between the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and NC stalwart and former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah. In the 1987 Assembly polls, the Congress contested on as many as 31 Assembly constituencies and won 26 seats while its alliance partner NC fought on 45 Assembly segments and managed to bag 40 seats. At that point of time, the State Legislative Assembly had a total strength of 76 Assembly seats which eventually risen to 87 seats in 1996. It was not only the reference on pre or post poll alliance of Congress was goofed up by Modi, the Prime Minister had another slip of tongue and another gaffe with historical facts when he accused the Congress of sitting in the lap of one of the regional parties which secured more setas in the Assembly polls. Modi while taking pot-shots at Congress said that depending on its suitability, the Congress adopts pick and choose policy and side with the NC or the PDP whichever has more numbers in the Assembly polls in the past. In reference to Congress party's post-poll alliance according to numbers, the Prime Minister was only half correct as it was the NC which had won more seats in 2008 Assembly polls than the Congress and both parties formed a coalition government. Here again, the Prime Minister Modi twisted the fact according to his own free will as he failed to remember that when Congress cobbled up a coalition with the PDP after the Assembly polls of 2002, the grand old party of the country had emerged victorious on 20 seats which was four more than what PDP has achieved. It is pertinent to mention here that it was not the first time that the Prime Minister has bungled over reality as he had a history of making mistakes while referring to past events. During 'Lalkaar Rally' at the same venue on December 1 last year, Modi had a gaffe when he got it wrong over the names of some of the recipients of gallantry awards and the medals they were awarded. Modi had mentioned that Major Som Nath Sharma was awarded Mahavir Chakra and Brigadier Rajinder Singh was decorated with Param Vir Chakra which was actually vice versa. It was same Modi, who during a rally in Bihar last year had referred Chandragupta Maurya as the king of Gupta dynasty and stated that Taxila is in Bihar while in reality it is in Pakistan. Modi again twisted the facts when he said that Alexander's army conquered the world but was defeated by the Biharis. In reality, Alexander's army neither crossed the Ganga nor was it defeated by Biharis. |
