Sportsmen forced to pay thousands to represent State in National Championships | Parents mulling PIL | | Criminal nexus between J&K Sports Council; Sports Associations! Abodh Sharma ET Report Jammu, Dec 26: In total disregard to huge investments made by the youth of the state to attain sports proficiency in terms of money, blood and sweat and crucial time during their career formative years, those representing state in national championships are being asked to pay in thousands for representing the state in national level championships owing to indifference of J&K Sports Council, conspiracy of different sports associations and the unholy nexus between the two. Parents of many such sportsmen are contemplating a Public Interest Litigation against the Council and the associations against this malpractice. It is strange that while other states are extending scholarships and concessions to their outstanding sportsmen, in J&K, those representing the state have to pay in thousands to the associations to represent the state and the 'business' is thriving at the behest of State Sports Council, which has connived with these associations to openly loot poor sportsmen and their parents. "It is strange that while government has made provision for DA, refreshment and AC travel for the sportsmen representing the state in nationals, players are not only deprived of these benefits, they have to on the contrary pay from their own pockets to represent the state" said a parent who pleaded anonymity apprehending that the concerned association could victimize his ward. Explaining the modus operandi adopted by the sports associations, he divulged that Sports Council officials deliberately withhold the payments to the associations against expenditure they have to incur for taking the teams for participation in the national championships and holding coaching camps prior to them. As a result, these associations deprive sportsmen of refreshment during coaching camps which is due to them @ Rs. 100 per day. These associations then demand money from the players for their travel, boarding and kitting expenses, which are much higher than the actual cost. Later, after the participation, the associations get their payments from the Council on furnishing exaggerated bills and the booty is shared with council officials and players are never paid back. "The players are transported in unreserved compartments like animals and payments are received for AC-III tier tickets," informed another parent adding, "malpractice has now been on for several years which has fleeced sportsmen and their poor parents and made certain Council officials pretty rich". He also informed that some officers of the Council have entered into criminal nexus with defaulter associations and have connived with them to further their vested interests. "We have gathered some vital information regarding these irregularities from Council records and we are likely to file a PIL in a competent court against these associations and officers of the J&K State Sports Council who have been party to their misdoings besides exposing the sports associations which have charged huge amount from the players in recent past" he added. |
