Soz, Azad stake claim on Cong MLAs for own survival | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 26: Instead of having introspection over the humiliating defeat of party candidates in Assembly elections, blame game has begun in the faction ridden State unit of Congress, which has remained divided in groups. Besides, in a bid to remain in good books of the high command, particularly the party supremo Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi, PCC president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz and former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad have also started making claims on their respective patronage to the elected MLAs in Assembly elections. According to the sources in Congress circles, both Azad and Soz group have started blaming each other for the defeat of party, which could secure only 12 seats in the Assembly elections. While Soz loyalist are alleging that Azad limited his campaign to specific constituencies and did not support them in the elections, the rival camp is holding the PCC chief responsible for the defeat because of wrong distribution of the mandate. Interestingly, both the camps are however unanimous in criticizing the role of AICC general secretary and Incharge J&K, Ambika Soni for managing mandate to some of her blue eyed candidates, who could not save even their deposits. Besides leveling allegations against each other, both the camps are make claims and counter claims over allegiance of the elected Congress MLAs. Azad loyalists seem more vocal in the campaign in this regard by making claim that all the elected MLAs belong to their camp. "Only 17 candidates were given party mandate on the recommendation of Azad Sahib and 12 of them emerged victorious while all others were either of Soz camp or had blessings of Ambika Soni," said a die-hard Azad loyalist while listing the names of candidates and their allegiance. On the other hand, Soz loyalists are rejecting the claims of Azad camp by citing the defeat of party candidates even in Chenab Valley. "We are also mulling to approach the high command, particularly Rahul Gandhi for lodging a complaint against Azad for intentionally avoiding to campaign for the candidates, who could have won if there was no sabotage from within the party," said a Soz loyalist. The claims and counter-claims of both the camps have made it clear that the war of factionalism in Congress is likely to further intensify in the forthcoming days as the frustration of being out of power in Centre as well as in the State may keep the two senior most leaders fuming against each other. |
