Early Times Report

Srinagar, Jan 14: Following Governor Narendra Nath Vohra's request the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has increased the kerosene oil allocation for the 4th quarter (January-March, 2015) for the State of Jammu and Kashmir.
The allocation has been increased by 4,512 kilo litres. The development comes close on the heels of Governor's request to the Ministry of Petroleum, Government of India, in this regard. Pertinently the Governor has already directed the Divisional Commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu to closely monitor both the availability and the prices of all essential commodities, including kerosene oil, so that no hardship is caused to the consumers.
At the same time the valley based kerosene dealers who are on indefinite strike against the central government's decision of slashing oil quota for Kashmir, Wednesday announced to defer their strike following Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Rohit Kansal's assurance of restoring the previous allocation in three days.
Talking to Early Times, President Kerosene Dealers Coordination Committee (KDCC), Ghulam Rasool Shalla said the dealers have decided to defer their strike after Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Rohit Kansal during a meeting assured them that the preceding quota will be restored in next three days.
"We cannot believe verbal statements that the decision has been revoked until we get any formal communiqué from the Union Petroleum Ministry. Till now, the Valley was getting 48.48 lakh litres of kerosene per month according to 2001 census. But it will be sheer injustice with the people of Kashmir in case the already deficit quota was slashed by such a huge margin (18 lakh litres)," Shalla said.
Pertinently, kerosene dealers have been protesting for the past some time against the central government decision to reduce the quota of kerosene oil to Jammu & Kashmir by over 18 lakh litres.
"The Divisional Commissioner has set a deadline of three days for the restoration of preceding allotment of 48.48 litres which was slashed by over 18 lakh litres by the Union Petroleum Ministry," said Shalla.
Shalla said the scheduled strike of kerosene dealers will be deferred till the ban is completely revoked. He maintained that as per 2011 census there are 10 lakh ration card holders in the valley and every card holder was getting seven litres of kerosene oil in winters and five in summers.
It is worth mentioning that the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas vide Order No: P-21016/41/2012-Dist dated 31 December 2014 has reduced the monthly quota of kerosene from 48.48 lakh litres to 30 lakh litres for Kashmir. Now, according to the new allocation, per ration card holder will get on an average three litres of kerosene per month.
