Engineer did not press for return of Guru's remains | Was there a secret deal? | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb 9: MLA Langat, Engineer Abul Rashid made no bones about his proximity with former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. 'I will vote for Azad," he said publicly. This `boldness' did not go well with the Saffron brigade. A complaint has been filed against the Engineer for violating election rules. The BJP complaint and the terms he set for voting for Azad will help him score a few more political points in the Valley. However, his silence and the silence of the Congress party on return of Afzal Guru's mortal remains has not gone unheeded. People have started asking questions. Engineer succeeded in getting an apology from some Congress leaders. They apologized for the Guru hanging saying it was unfortunate. But why did not the Engineer ask for a statement on return of remains from the Congress leaders in lieu of his support for Azad? Azad won by just two votes and the party (Congress) was fully aware of the situation. Every single vote was valuable for them because they had almost lost the opportunity of leading the opposition in the Rajya Sabha. He could have managed to extract a statement from the Congress high command. But the engineer did not press for it. Was there a secret deal? |
