srinagar, Feb 9: Despite increase in the number of hospitals in rural Kashmir to give rural poor an access to medical facilities, lack of infrastructure has turned these hospitals defunct resulting in the loss of precious lives.
To endorse the health sector of the rural population the central and state governments from time to time established hospitals across the length and breadth of rural areas, but the hospitals have failed to provide benefits that they were meant for.
"The government by now and then comes with new hospitals for the rural areas. Tall buildings are constructed but who really cares about the health care. With no facility available at these hospitals people are forced to move to the city for treatment," said Abdul Majeed a resident of Nowpora-Baramulla.
Majeed said that a Public Health Center (PHC) in his village has poor infrastructure coupled with inadequate manpower forcing the inhabitants to move to the city for diagnosis.
While most of these primary and secondary care hospitals in villages and other towns lack proper medical facilities and manpower, this results in the frequent referring of the patients to the hospitals in Srinagar which at times results in the avoidable deaths on the way.
"Poor infrastructure in the primary and secondary health centers, non-availability of doctors, delay in treatment caused due to referring of the patients to sub-district hospitals and then to Srinagar, the huge rush of patients in city hospitals and many more factors combine together to affect the patient care in valley, which often prove to be fatal," said Dr Nazir Ahmad Shusha.
While looking at the ground situation there are nine district hospitals, 47 Sub District Hospitals 228 Public Health Centers, 125 Allopathic dispensaries, 939 sub centers and 280 medical aid centers in the rural areas of Kashmir valley. Despite having the huge chunk of hospitals the rural population is still at the receiving end.
Most importantly these hospitals lack Emergency care including trauma and disaster management service that is important to cater the serious case. Surprisingly many Sub District hospitals and Public Health Centers have turned mare into dispensaries. It is an alarming issue; this definitely needs to be highlighted.
Sources in the health department reveal that doctors negligence to attend their duties in far flung areas and presence of drug mafia is taking a toll on the health sector of rural Kashmir.
"Many blue eyed doctors by using contacts never pay any heed to visit the village hospitals. They prefer to run their own private clinics, drawing huge salaries without bothering about the patients. Quacks who are active in the market misuse the medical apparatus and drugs meant for the improvement of health sector." said sources
