baramulla, Feb 9: A 20-year-old youth was killed and another one injured when security forces fired at demonstrators who were protesting in connection with the second death anniversary of parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru in the Palhallan area of Pattan town in this north Kashmir district today.
Reports said that in the evening time a group of youth raised anti-government slogans and demanded that the mortal remains of Guru who was executed in Tihar Jail for his role in the attack on Parliament on December 13, 2001 are handed over to his relatives.
"Youth fought pitched battles with security forces and in retaliation the security forces burst some tear smoke in air to disperse the angry protesters after which fierce clashes broke out between forces and youth. Suddenly there were some gun shots after which there was pandemonium in the entire Palhallan area," eye-witnesses told Early Times.
Sources said as the clashes turned violent, forces fired upon protesters resulting in injuries to three persons. The injured were immediately rushed to hospital where a youth identified as Farooq Ahmad succumbed to his injuries. Separatist leaders had called for a strike today in connection with the death anniversary of Guru.
A senior official told Early Times that the youngsters pelted stones at the Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, who fired tear smoke shells in an effort to disperse them.
Failing to control the situation, the security forces fired some rounds at the protesters, resulting in death of Farooq Ahmad Bhat S/O Ghulam Ahmad Bhat R/O Bhagat Mohallah, Palhallan and injuries to Riyaz Ahmad Dar, who has been shifted to a local hospital for treatment, said the official.
The official said that police has taken cognizance into this highly 'regrettable' and unfortunate incident adding that an FIR has been registered in the matter and the incident is being investigated and all concerned are being questioned to ascertain the facts. Senior civil administration and police officials have rushed to the site of protests.
Meanwhile, a massive deployment of police and paramilitary forces was made across the North Kashmir following the incident. At the same time various roads leading to the native place of Guru were blocked with rolls of concertina wires with security personnel manning the barricades. The situation is still tense in the Palhallan area of Baramulla district and protests are still going on at various places, till the last reports came in.
