Alert police foils SBI ATM burglary, one held | | | Asif Iqbal Naik

Kishtwar, Feb 9: Police today claimed to have foiled a bid to loot State Bank of India (SBI) ATM situated in centrally located ever busy old bus stand area of the town during the intervening night of February 8/9 with the arrest of one bugler who made a futile bid to decamp with Rs 16 lakh cash inside the cash box of ATM. Police have registered a case in this regard and further investigations are on. Police sources said, "The accused has ben identified namely as Ravi Sharma son of Nand Lal resident of Lohidhar Chatroo an employee of PMGSY Department and is said to be working as Computer Operator. While divulging the details to "Early times", Additional SP Kishtwar Abdul Qayoom said that alert police party while patrolling in Kishtwar city noticed some suspicious movements besides some clattering sound from inside the ATM counter of State Bank of India Branch at Saboor Complex Mini Bus Stand Kishtwar. "Taking cognizance of the suspicious sounds near ATM, the swung into action and cordoned the ATM locality, police official said. He said, "During the searching the ATM Counter, the police party found one suspect while breaking in ATM counter and making bid to broke open the cash box of machine with a criminal intention. He said during the preliminary investigations bank authorities too were called in at the spot who got ATM machine inspected revealed that cash amounting to Rs 16 Lakh was in the machine at the time of incident. He said the culprit immediately was been taken under custody and a case was registered under FIR No 15/2015 u/s 457/380/511 RPC at P/S Kishtwar against the accused and further investigations are on. He however added that further questioning/interrogation of the accused is going on in order to ascertain the modus operandi and his other accomplice if any. Meanwhile the alertness and dutifulness of Police was highly appreciated by the general public of Kishtwar town. Pertinent to mention that this is the fourth bid to loot this SBI ATM in last couple of years, while a major bank robbery of Rs 1.06 Crore at the chest of Jammu and Kashmir Bank Kishtwar on July 7/8 of 2009 yet has to be solved. Although Kishtwar police claimed to have worked out this robbery case with the arrest of all the accused involved but police only had recovered some Rs 56 lakh while the rest Rs 50 lakh still is missing. For the inept the case later was handed over to Crime Branch Jammu for further investigation and the investigations are under progress even after five years. In this mountainous district making bids to loot ATMs and bank robberies have become routine for police as earlier one bugler was caught while making bid to broke into SBI ATM on OM Mehta Road Kishtwar, similar bid was also reported from ATM of SBI at well guarded NHPC Colony Kishtwar and another was foiled at ATM Counter Chinar Galli Kishtwar. |
