Early Times Report

Srinagar, Mar 17: The mafia associated with sale and purchase of substandard pesticides and Fertilizers having gained access to officials, meetings of concerned department betray authorities on availability and nature of pesticides and fertilizers in markets. Expressing shock over the development, people from different parts of Kashmir told Early Times that some noted faces of Kashmir associated with pesticides and fertilizer business betray authorities on availability and nature of pesticides and fertilizers supplied to Kashmir markets.
They suspect that politically backed mafia who earned wealth worth crores of Rupees over the years by supplying and self prescribing substandard Pesticides and fertilizers to Orchardists in absence of answerability from concerned Department can still be seen attending official meetings with impunity and betraying concerned Department. Citing a reference, Gulzar Ahmad one Orchardist from North Kashmir's Sopore said that on Monday he was surprised to see some noted distributors of different parts of Kashmir in a meeting allegedly attended by none other than divisional commissioner Kashmir, Director Agriculture and other concerned officials of Agriculture and Horticulture departments held in Srinagar. He said that it was discouraging to see people dealing with Pesticides and fertilizer business in meetings with officials of concerned department as it raises many doubts about intentions of authorities.
President Fruit Growers Association Shopian, Mushtaq Ahmad Malik said that instead of seeking public opinion and launching a drive to seize Substandard pesticides and fertilizers from Kashmir markets, concerned department allegedly encourages the unlawful business by inviting Pesticides and Fertilizer Distributors in their meetings.
"It goes beyond doubt that in all such meetings distributors associated with Pesticides and Fertilizer business betrayed concerned officials over availability and nature of pesticides and Fertilizers available in markets "Malik Told Early Times. Orchardists said that despite tall claims of authorities time and again, hundreds of pesticides and fertilizers tagged with different brand names and price lines are available in markets and sold to Orchardists.
They said that their repeated complaints about curbing supply of pesticides and fertilizers to Jammu and Kashmir not prescribed by Sheri-Kashmir-university of Agricultural Science and Technology (SKUAST) and experts of Agriculture and Horticulture departments falls in deaf ears as no action was take till date to stop supply of such pesticides and Fertilizers to state.
Farmers and Orchardists said that SKUAST should make spray schedule books available for common masses in far-flung areas so that they can buy only prescribed pesticides and fertilizers from markets and shun using substandard pesticides and fertilizers.
Orchardists appeal Governor NN Vohra to make 'Pesticides and Fertilizers Regulatory Board' already founded by previous PDP-BJP Government functional by appointing its members so that a proper Scientific mechanism could be laid to check nature of Pesticides and Fertilizers before allowed to sold in markets to common masses.
