Early Times Report

Nowshera, Mar 27: Even as Nowshera people continued their protests on the 40th consecutive day Tuesday to demand district status for this border town, the government tries to paint a "false picture by issuing misleading statements" wherein they say that the situation is returning to normal.
"The government is trying to mislead people by issuing concocted press notes. Nothing is normal and nothing will remain normal unless Nowshera is granted district status. We shall continue our protest till we achieve that," said a protester.
All the seven branches of J&K Bank and ATMs remain closed on Tuesday. There is no visible movement of traffic on the roads either.
Meanwhile, a government statement said that government offices, educational institutes, started functioning normally in the border town.
Earlier, the protesters clashed with the police which triggered intense stone-pelting in various parts of Nowshera. Many police officials and protesters were injured during the clashes. Consequently, the internet was snapped in the entire town as a precautionary measure.
The protesters, however, got angered at the brute force used by the police and have decided to continue their protest and to take the agitation "to its logical end".
They said that already a youth leader, who was slapped by the SDPO Nowshera, had attempted a suicide and his condition is said to be serious. People in the border town claim that even before independence, Nowshera was a tehsil and now it should be upgraded as a full-fledged district.
