Bollywood's fate linked to court verdict on Salman Khan
4/7/2018 11:31:35 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 7: Thank God a Pakistani friend of Salman Khan has not questioned the court verdict under which the noted Bollywood actor has been sentenced to five-year jail.
Yes, Salman's friend, a noted cricketer, Shoaib Akhtar, has simply said that the punishment has been quite harsh. Yes, if Akhtar claims that he is a friend of Salman Khan his anguish and anger against the punishment is justified.
The former Pakistani fast bowler is upset that his "friend" Salman Khan has been sentenced to five-years in prison in a case of poaching blackbucks. He finds the punishment harsh. As a Pakistani, Akhtar was expected to question the verdict, but he has not behaved like a politician in Pakistan who, day in and day out, berate the Indian system where judiciary is recognized as one of the pillars of democracy. "Really sad to see my friend Salman Khan sentenced for 5 year. But the Law must take its course & we got to respect the decision of honourable court of India but i still think punishment is to harsh but my heart goes to his family & fans ..Am sure he will out soon," Akhtar tweeted.
Salman has been sentenced to five-years in prison after a Jodhpur court convicted him for killing two rare blackbucks. Chief Judicial Magistrate Dev Kumar Khatri, while pronouncing the verdict in the case of killing the protected antelopes, called the 52-year-old actor a "habitual offender" under the Wildlife Protection laws of the country.
It took the court to decide the case after 20 years which speaks volumes about delays. It is a case of "justice delayed."
With Salman Khan being held guilty in the blackbuck poaching case by the Jodhpur court on Thursday, there's now a question mark on some of the films and TV shows that the actor is a part of. One of the most powerful and successful actors in the Hindi film industry, Salman's conviction and resultant further legal battle in higher courts will continue to haunt the projects that he is working on.
Salman Khan has also signed Ali Abbas Zafar's 'Bharat', which is being pitted as the actor's "patriotic pitch". Set against the Partition of 1947, Bharat is being adapted from the 'Ode to My Father', a 2014 South Korean drama film directed by Yoon Je-kyoon. Salman will reportedly sport five different looks in it. If the rumour mills are to be believed, Priyanka Chopra is a very strong contender to be his leading lady in the film.
Reportedly Salman's most ambitious project till date, 'Bharat' has an estimated budget of Rs 200 crore. The shoot is expected to start this April, and the film is slated to release on Eid 2019.
The makers of Bharat would need to reschedule their shoot and release dates depending on quantum of punishment that Salman receives.
Salman has got a bail and was released from the jail on Saturday, but if at all the actor faces imprisonment under the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, 'Race 3' might get badly affected with continuity problems and also a delay in its release date. Directed by Remo D' Souza, the film also stars Anil Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez and Bobby Deol among others. As of now, 'Race 3' is set for an Eid 2018 release.
The conviction comes as bad news for the producers, the shoot of the film - believed to have been made with a budget of a minimum of Rs 100 crore to Rs 120 crore - is yet to be wrapped up.
The 'Sultan' actor had reportedly shot for a song for 'Race 3' in Abu Dhabi right before he returned to Mumbai on Wednesday and flew to Jodhpur for the verdict in the blackbuck poaching case.
Rough reports say that several hundred crores may be lost in the Bollywood if Salman is punished. Yes, he has to undergo series of trials when he and his lawyer knock the doors of higher courts against the Jodhpur Court verdict. Till then the fate of his films can be described as uncertain.
