Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 9: Alleging highhandedness and sheer exploitation of the laboureres, the Jammu & Kashmir Peoples' Democratic Trade Union (JKPDTU) has lamented the condition of the laboureres, engaged by different private contractors/agencies for executing railway projects in Reasi/ Katra and Sangaldan Brala.
Addressing media persons here today, the state president JKPDTU, Suresh Sharma alleged that the companies particularly Patel Engineering, ITD and UTM have let loose rein of terror amongst the poor labourers by their musclemen if ever these workers tried to raise voice against the inhuman and injustice meted-out to them.
Sharma severely criticized the management of these private companies for violating labour laws. He expressed his surprise that labourers are not being paid minimum wages plus twice DA increase in a year as announced by Ministryof Labourer Affairs, Government of India. No allowances like Tunnel, Dust, medical allowance and no OT cards as admissible under law are being issued by these companies. Moreover these companies/contractors are not issuing monthly wage slip to the workers. Neither any development works under CSR are executed.
Sharma declared that in case companies fail to pay minimum wages as fixed, pay all allowances admissible, deposit PF and re-engaged all terminated workers in Reasi sector and issue over time cards to the labourer, the worker will go on strike at all sites in Reasi and Ramban sectors and the responsibility shall be entirely of the contractors/private agencies engaged by the Railways.
