Local MLA not finding place to hide
Anger grips Hiranagar

Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 9: The people of Kathua and Samba districts had been on the roads since months demanding CBI probe into the alleged murder of a Gujjar minor girl Asifa, saying that they had no faith in the Crime Branch and that only a probe by CBI could bring the real culprit to justice and save the innocents from harassment, torture and sense of insecurity. There was a time when when two BJP ministers - Lal Singh and Chander Prakash Ganga - two local MLAs -Rajeev Jastrotia and Kuldip Raj - were with the agitating people. They had not once but repeatedly endorsed their demand seeking CBI probe into the alleged murder of Asifa.
Since the two BJP ministers failed to honour the commitment, the people of Hiranagar condemned them and accused them of "cheating the people of Kathua". They tried their best to convince the BJP of the need of a CBI probe but with no result. At the same time, however, BJP MLA from Hiranagar, Kuldip Raj, stood solidly behind the people of his constituency. It was quite understandable.
However, on Sunday, he took a complete U-turn under pressure from the BJP high command and rejected the demand for a CBI probe. So much so, he said that he had full faith in the Crime Branch team investigating the case.
"He has complete faith in the Crime Branch that is probing the rape and murder of 8-year old tribal girl Asifa. The Crime Branch is the premier probe agency of the state and I don't find any reason to criticize it. Our people also understand that," Kuldip Raj said while rejecting the demand for a CBI probe.
At the same time, he also said: "Those protesting against BJP too have the right to protest. We cannot stop them from protesting and I know that it will dent party's image in Kathua and Hiranagar. But just because some people are protesting, we cannot raise fingers over our premier agency Crime Branch. Until the challan is produced in the court, the BJP has to face 'a section of people protesting against the party in Kathua and Jammu with folded hands".
This U-turn of the local BJP MLA has only added fuel to the fire and further angered the already rather angry people of Kathua and Samba districts. This doesn't augur well for the future of the BJP.
