NHPC exploiting youth of Chenab Valley: Firdous Tak
4/22/2018 10:26:38 PM
Early Times Report
Kishtwar, Apr 22: Urging state and union governments to intervene, Member of Legislative Council (MLC), Firdous Tak Sunday castigated National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) for exploitation of unemployed youth of Chenab Valley.
"Resentment is brewing among people against the discrimination meted out to the region as power projects have benefited the company and central government, which are exploiting the natural resources of Chenab valley leaving a devastating effect on the environment but in return denying the region its due share", he said. Tak was speaking during a one day convention organised by Chenab Valley Power Projects Workers Union, where he was invited as chief guest.
He said that PDP will not allow exploitation of the youth to continue and party is fighting for their rights. "For years locals are being engaged on contractual basis while outsiders are being given preference in permanent jobs. This is totally unacceptable. Locals should be given preference in employment in new power projects being executed", he said.
Asserting that the hydel projects have caused serious ecological imbalance across mountainous Chenab Valley, Tak sought focused and long term environment policy aimed at regenerating the forest cover in the region.
"NHPC is reaping benefits of our exploited resources and construction of projects is coming at the cost of environmental and geographical hazards to the area and there is need for a long term policy to address these issues", he said.
He also raised the issue of missing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreement document between NHPC and Jammu and Kashmir government on Dul Hasti Power Project (DHPP) signed during the National Conference led government headed by then Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah.
The MLC called upon people of Kishtwar to stay united and fight for their rights as for decades the region has been neglected when it comes to development. He sought cooperation and support of people to realize the dream of PDP leadership to develop the Chenab valley and use its natural resources for the economic upliftment of population.
He said that the opposition National Conference and Congress were today trying to project themselves as the well wishers of people by raising one issue or the other. "The fact that is that the prestigious projects in hydel and road sectors have only benefitted the leaders of these two parties. The people know how NC and Congress leaders filled their coffers at the cost of the general masses", he said.
