Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, May 4: Authorities of Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar made a mockery of the laid down rules and regulations by cancelling the interview of candidates who had applied for various posts at the college.
Reports said the walk in interview of the candidates was cancelled on the day when the whole interview process was to start. The cancellation of the interview came as no less than a shock for the candidates who had aspired to face the same with the hope that they would get a chance to work in the government sector even on academic arrangement.
"Applications on prescribed format (Annexure-A) are invited from the permanent residents of J&K State (Divisional Cadre Kashmir) who are not in service for walk in interview to be held w.e.f 3rd May 2018 for engagement of eligible persons on academic arrangement basis under SRO-384 of 2009 Dated 14-12-2009 read with SRO-409 of 2013 Dated 19-09-2013," reads the Advertisement Notice No: 03-AHS of 2018.
The advertisement notice that was issued on 26-4-2018 further reads that the applications have been invited against the posts mentioned below in the advertisement notice in the Government Medical College/Associated Hospitals Sgr for a period of one year or till such time the posts are properly filled up by the competent authority, in accordance with the existing Recruitment Rules, 1979 whichever is earlier.
The posts advertised were Anesthesia Assistant, Theater Assistant, Junior Pharmacist/Medical Assistant and Laboratory Assistant. Interestingly, the GMC authorities did not mention about the posts available at the GMC Srinagar and the associated hospitals that work under the aegis of GMC Srinagar.
The authorities of GMC Srinagar were themselves unaware about the positions vacant. It was due to this reason that Administrator Associated Hospitals GMC Srinagar wrote a letter to Chief Accounts Officer asking the officer to update the concerned authorities about the vacancy position.
"Kindly furnish up to date vacancy position in respect of the following categories of the posts as per the format, so that we can fill up the vacancies by promotion/engagement of suitable candidates on academic arrangement basis for smooth functioning of the hospitals," reads the correspondence shot by Administrator Associated Hospitals, GMC Srinagar on 01-05-2018. The posts referred to in the correspondence are Anesthesia Assistant, Theatre Assistant, Junior Pharmacist/ Medical Assistant and Laboratory Assistant.
As the clerical staff was on strike the information could not be passed on to the concerned authorities. This resulted into a situation where around 1,000 candidates thronged the GMC Srinagar campus on Thursday (May 3) in order to appear in the interview for the posts advertised by the medical college authorities.
Principal GMC Srinagar issued a bizarre order on 3-5-2018 in which it has been written that the walk in interview has been cancelled following huge rush of candidates. It has been written in the order that instead of walk in interview a written examination would be conducted for different posts and separate notifications would be issued in this regard in the print media and also uploaded on the website of the college.
