Tainted Jr faculty close to Ex-Health Minister still calling shots in GMC

Early Times Report

Jammu, May 9: For last few years it has been seen that some faculty members of Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, to keep their hegemony for personal benefits, come closer to the principal as well as the Health Minister. One such faculty member attended BOPEE meeting at Srinagar without informing his head of the department.
Sources said these faculty members, who are close to the people in the power corridors, are in fact responsible for failure of two previous principals of GMC Jammu. And they continue to call the shots in the GMC Jammu.
A faculty member who was close to former Health Minister, was sent by the principal to attend BOPEE meeting at Srinagar on Monday without taking his HOD/HOU in confidence.
Similarly, another doctor was sent to BOPEE office Jammu for conducting counselling for MD/MS. In both instances some senior and more experienced faculty members could have been sent for the said job, but the principal "preferred sycophants around her for the job," sources told Early Times.
They said even the former Health Minister was misguided by one junior faculty member for almost two years. "He almost became 'super principal' and misguided the former minister," said the sources.
"The said doctor preferred to accompany the minister's during the latter's tours to far-flung areas of the state, ignoring his basic duties of teaching medical students, performing OPD duties and attending operation theatre. The doctor many a time even threatened various staff members as well as some faculty members citing his proximity to the former principal and the minister," the sources added.
When the principal was suspended, the junior faculty member under question ditched him and came closer to the new principal Dr. Sunanda Raina, said the sources.
"He even went on getting recommendations of Academic Registrar for himself forwarded to Principal Secretary Health, who out rightly rejected the recommendations, though," said the sources.
Pertinently, the said doctor got two quick and undue promotions from Lecturer to Assistant Profesorr (DPC) and then Assistant Professor to Associate Professor (in-charge). There are instances in the GMC where faculty members have been made in-charge in higher grades but their DPCs have not been done.
With the change of guards at ministerial level and Dr. Manyal getting portfolio of Health, "it was hoped the situation at administrative levels are going to change and a capable principal and senior faculty members shall be taken into confidence for making important decisions," said the sources.
"But the happenings in last two days do not inspire any confidence," they added.
