KUPWARA, June 3: Army on Sunday claimed that an infiltration bid was foiled in Keran sector of north Kashmir's Kupwara district by killing a militant. While as in another militancy related incident, two slain militants that were killed on May 31 where identified by police today as commanders of JeM.
An army official said that a joint team of army's 4/4 GR and 103 bn BSF posted near Ustad Post adjacent to Manjeet Post in Keran sector along the Line of Control (LoC) noticed some suspicious movement near the fence today in the afternoon.
"The army fired some shots which were retaliated by the infiltrators. The militants fired indiscriminately and in the gunfight that ensued, an infiltrator was killed so far," he said.
The official said that the body of the slain has been recovered along with an AK-47 and four magazines from the gunfight spot. "We are ascertaining his identity and outfit affiliation," the army official told ET.
However a senior police official said that a militant has been killed; adding when reports last came in, the operation was going on in the area. The additional reinforcement was rushed to the area and a massive search operation with the help of sniffer dogs was launched to trace out the other members of the group, the official added.
Meanwhile police on Sunday identified two militants who were killed in a gunfight on May 31 in Handwara area of this north Kashmir district as top commanders of Jaish-i-Mohammad. An official investigating the case said that both the militants belonged to Jaish-i-Mohammad (JeM) outfit and have been identified as Mehmood Bhai and Waqas alias Hyder. The duo was heading towards the LoC to receive the newly infiltrated group of Jaish when the gunfight broke out at Qaziabad forests in Kralgund on last Thursday.
