Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, July 3: Jammu & Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (J&K PCC) President Ghulam Ahmad Mir today demanded that Governor Narendra Nath Vohra should dissolve the assembly so that there is no horse trading in the state. He however did not set out any time frame for the same.
Talking to media persons' midway during a meeting of Congress leaders here, Mir said that dissolution of assembly would ensure that credibility of Vohra is not hit and that people have faith in him. He said that prime responsibility of the stakeholders in the state should be to maintain peace and tranquility. "For an ideal democracy it is important that the Governor rule is imposed for a limited period of time. The Governor has already said that he would consult the legal experts before taking a final call on the nomenclature of the assembly. It would be prudent for him to take a decision on this issue at the earliest so that there is no horse trading in Jammu & Kashmir," said the PCC Chief.
Mir said that as on date the Congress party is not interested in forming any government in the state with the support of any other political party. He somewhat remained non-committal over the holding of assembly elections in the state saying that the prime concern should be to restore order in the Kashmir valley.
"Over the past two or two and half years we have witnessed that situation has gone from bad to worse in the Kashmir valley. This is all due to the wrong policies of the previous PDP-BJP government. Therefore, all the political parties should pitch in and play their part in ensuring that situation in the state especially Kashmir valley," said PCC Chief.
Responding to BJP leader Kavinder Gupta's statement that his party would form the government with the support of 'rebel' PDP legislators, Mir said that anti-defection law is strong in the state and as such the possibility of such a government cannot be thought of. He said that nobody from PDP has approached Congress to join the party.
"As on date we all should be concerned over the law & order situation in Kashmir and our prime task to make the things to settle down in the valley. Elections can be held in conducive manner when there is no fear whatsoever. The Congress has no design to form the government in Jammu & Kashmir and I want to make the things clear in this respect," said PCC Chief. The Congress party meeting was attended by leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad, in-charge J&K affairs, Ambika Soni, former PCC Chief, Saif-ud-din Soz, party legislators and other party functionaries.
