Congress rejects PDP feelers to form Govt
7/3/2018 10:44:32 PM
Since the Governor, N.N. Vohra, has
kept the Assembly in a suspended animation, it has given room for horse trading when the Congress, the PDP and the National Conference are eager to form the Government. According to Harsh Dev Singh, Chief of the Panthers Party by keeping the House in suspended animation the legislators are entitled to several perks which is a drain on the state exchequer. He too wants the Assembly to be dissolved and followed by fresh elections. That is reason on the part of Harsh Dev Singh because he does not want to promote horse trading and the birth of Aaya Rams and Gaya Ram in the troubled state. And the latest news is that the Congress is being approached by the PDP and the National Conference for the formation of a new Government. Well the Congress and the National Conference may not be able to form the Government because of the numerical strength which is short of even forming the Government on the basis of simple majority. Well the Congress and the PDP could form the Government but the Congress is not in a hurry.
The Congress core group on Jammu and Kashmir has met in the capital to discuss the evolving situation in the state. The meeting took place at the residence of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who chaired the group. Also, present were senior leaders Karan Singh, Ghulam Nabi Azad, P Chidambaram, Congress general secretary in charge of the state Ambika Soni and Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief Ghulam Ahmed Mir. The meeting was held following reports that the Congress was being approached both by the National Conference and the PDP to form a government in J&K after the BJP pulled out of the coalition with the PDP. The opinions in the Congress are divided on whether to go ahead with government formation at this stage.
The Congress has opted for wait and watch policy which would be the best for the moment as passions are soaring and the ground situation is very volatile. While the PDP has lost chunk of its support base the NC clearly has something to gain from that loss. The BJP too has positioned itself for its constituencies in Jammu and Ladakh by talking of Mehbooba Mufti led PDPs step motherly treatment to the Jammu and Ladakh regions. Despite this breast beating and crocodile tears the BJP cannot muster as much support of its traditional vote bank as it got in 2014 Assembly election. The 2014 poll was a watershed for the BJP when it won, for the first time 25 seats out of 37,which was responsible for motivating late Mufti Sayeed to form a coalition Government with the BJP. The alliance between the BJP and the PDP has cost dearly to the PDP which has suffered severe erosion in its vote bank in the Kashmir valley, from where it had won 25 seats in 2014 with three seats from the region of Jammu to emerge as the largest single party. This way Vohra is responsible for promoting political instability in Jammu and Kashmir by keeping the Assembly in suspended animation.
