Kishtwar: Fraud alleged in ration distribution
7/13/2018 10:30:39 PM

Early Times Report
Kishtwar, July 13: Kishtwar's Marwah area is infamous for various ration scandals in last two decades and subsequent scuttling of probes by corrupt officials. But now they are hoping that the Governor's regime will order probe in fresh embezzlement of ration.
The people of Marwah have written to the Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar demanding magisterial probe into the misappropriation of public ration and inquiry into the accumulation of huge moveable and immoveable property, beside replacement of present staff with permanent staff.
The people have expressed resentment against the night chowkidars working in several ration depots as salesmen in Marwah division and added that these night Chowkidars cum salesmen were allowed by the department to swindle the public ration. They said that there is no proper system of inviting tenders for carriage/loading/unloading.
They allege that instead of providing the ration to genuine families, the officials of the department withdraw the ration quota of the name of bogus ration card holders and the same is sold in black market.
The people demand that permanent salesmen should be posted at ration depots at the earliest possible time so that people could get sigh of relief. They said that due to non-availability of proper roads, electricity and communication system, the people fail to complain on time so that the accused could be arrested red handed at the time of misappropriation of the ration.
It is pertinent to mention that keeping in view of far flung approach, the department of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution withdraws around Rs. 2800 carriage charge for one quintal of ration while the cost of the ration is around Rs. 250-400/quintal and if only one thousand quintal ration could be embezzled by the officials of department, the government exchequer will face losses to the tune of Rs. 28 lacs which excludes the ration sold in black market at higher rates-thus making the losses to the state exchequer in crores as thousands of quintal of ration meant for the poor and rural population is being embezzled every year with the active involvement of officials of the department.
