Second attempt: PDP resumes lobbying for alliance with Congress | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 18: After a previous failure to convince Congress for an alliance on government formation in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has resumed lobbing for the same through second attempt. Sources said a senior PDP leader, who is also a businessman, has been in touch with some senior Congress leaders to "reconcile on need to form government." Sources said the PDP leader has been assigned this task by some of his senior colleagues, who want him to "prove his loyalty" towards the party leadership which is facing rebellion. Sources said the PDP leader in question has been holding deliberation with the Congress leadership within the state chapter and in New Delhi. It was reliably learnt that the PDP leader who is also a former minister is trying to use his good offices to cobble up a new era of relationship with the Congress. But the Congress till now has been unwilling to form the alliance. Though some time back the PDP made a similar attempt, the other party refused the proposal. The congress leadership has been accusing the PDP of being an "unreliable ally." "This party backstabbed Azad Sahib's regime in 2008 and pulled out of the alliance on Amarnath Land row though decision with regard to allotment of land to shrine board was taken by the ministry headed by the PDP," said a senior Congress leader on condition of anonymity. But sources said some of the Congress leaders from the state chapter, who are not in good terms with former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad are trying hard for another alliance with the PDP. Sources said the same group is close to the PDP leader who is making second attempt to seek support for the formation of the alliance. Sources said the PDP has been pleading before the Congress that in accordance with how BJP was kept out of power in Karnataka, the same strategy needs to be implemented in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Sources said PDP wants a "kind of Maha Ghatbnadhan" in the state to keep BJP away. Observers said for former Chief Minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti it is a golden chance to keep her party intact and to prevent any further onslaught from the rebels headed by her party colleague Imran Reza Ansari. Ansari has been throwing weight behind separatist turned mainstream leader Sajjad Gani Lone who has two seats in the state Assembly as the prospective Chief Minister of the state. Sajjad is equally close to the BJP top brass in the national capital. Despite repeated attempts the PDP leader in question could'nt be contacted for comments. |
