Magam residents protest against local MC
On 5th anniversary of SBM
10/2/2018 10:21:23 PM
Early Times Report

Budgam, Oct 2: At a time when whole country is celebrating 5th anniversary of Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), the residents of Magam town in Budgam along with large number of RTI activists protested against the local Municipal Committee (MC) on Tuesday for its failure to dispose off the garbage in a scientific manner and as per guidelines of Solid Waste Rules 2016.
Details available with Early Times reveal that scores of youth from Magam gathered under the banner of J&K RTI Foundation and came on streets at Magam on Srinagar Gulmarg road and raised slogans against the authorities for its failure to undertake scientific waste management in Magam town. The youth said authorities have moral authority to celebrate the swachhta day as they have failed to deliver sanitation service to the Magam residents.
"The Municipal Committee Magam has been dumping all the garbage in local water body called Ferozpur Nallah, we have been trying our best to persuade them but the MC Magam and district administration Budgam are not paying any attention towards our grievance. So we chose October 2nd to lodge our protest in order to shake the conscience of the authorities who are celebrating 5th anniversary of Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) and Swachtaa hi Seva campaign.
These celebrations by Municipal and Govt authorities is mere gimmick as there is no change seen on the ground "said Irfan Banka Chairman of RTI Foundation who was leading the protest.
As reported earlier, this year Rs 60 crores have remained unspent in Budgam and Baramulla districts alone under Solid Liquid Waste Management (SLWM) programme of Swach Bharat Mission Gramin (SBM Gramin). Sources say that the unspent money was to be provided to each Gram Panchayat @ Rs 7 to 20 lakhs depending upon the village population. From October 2014 till September 2018, not a single penny has been provided to J&K Government as Rural Development Department and its Sanitation wing (Rural Sanitation) have failed to prepare DPRs for the proposed work and send the same to Govt of India.
