PDP legislator's 'close aide' had militant links, was involved in stone-pelting

Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 2: A security guard of a PDP legislator decamping with the seven rifles and a registered pistol of the MLA from heart of the Srinagar city has put a question mark over the recruitment process of the Special Police Officers in Kashmir.
It may be recalled that when Peoples Democratic Party was in power it had managed to get the Lion's share for recruiting SPOs in Kashmir, while Jammu and Ladakh regions had to remain content with peanuts.
An insider said that PDP during its rule went out of way to accommodate its own workers and their own people and in the process they even got sympathizers of separatists and militants recruited. "The blunders which were committed by the PDP are slowly coming to fore," he added.
Sources told Early Times when PDP was in power SPOs were appointed through a backdoor."In many cases antecedents of the SPOs were not even verified," they claimed.
Adil Sheikh, who decamped with the riffles and a pistol and joined Hizbul Mujahideen, according to the initial investigations, was a close aide of MLA Wachi, Ajaz Ahmed Mir. The PDP legislators had used his influence to get him (Adil) appointed in the force. "The probe has revealed that prior to his appointment Adil was involved in stone-pelting incidents and was in touch with the militants. These factors were ignored as the MLA used his good offices to get him inducted in Jammu and Kashmir Police," the sources alleged.
They said that the accused SPO used to do all sorts of menial jobs for his "sahib" (MLA Mir) like preparing tea for his guests and cleaning his quarter. He was not a SPO. In fact he was just a domestic help. "The SPO decamping with the riffles has shaken the police top brass and directions have been passed to look into the appointments of the SPOs which were made during PDP-BJP rule," sources added.
An official said that all these appointments would have to be looked into as the SPOs with militant links can prove to be dangerous for anyone's security. "When PDP-BJP was ruling the state security agencies on many occasions had expressed dismay over the political interference in the police department. Top officials had even asked the then Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who was also holding the Home portfolio to ask the MLAs not to interfere," the official added.
He said, "One black sheep has put the question mark over the integrity of the entire police department. We have to identify these black sheep and throw them out from the system."
