Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Oct 7: Barely hours before the commencement of municipal polls in the state the polling staff lodged at different polling stations complained that nothing is in order and the administration has virtually failed them.
A group of employees who are discharging their duties told Early Times that despite the tall claims of the people at helm no proper arrangement of lodging has been made for them. They said that in absence of the same they are forced to take rest at the places where voting is taking place.
"The administration had claimed that 300 hotels have been hired for the lodging of poll staff. However, on ground there is nothing like that and we have been told to sleep at the polling station. There is no proper arrangement in place and there is a huge gap between rhetoric and actual position," said the employees.
By 9 PM when this report was filed the employees said that they were yet to be provided dinner at the polling stations. They said that only a packet of lunch was given to them and no refreshment was provided later on. They said that the harsh treatment being meted out to them gives a feeling that they are 'beggars'.
"Contrary to the tall claims there is no arrangement of lodging and at the same time no bedding whatsoever has been given to us.
There is total failure on part of the administration and complete mismanagement is visible on the ground. What is fun of risking the life when things are not in place?" said employees.
The employees said that a polling staff team comprising of four employees have been given Rs. 4,850 to manage the expenses incurred on the polling duty days. They said the amount is meagre more so since they have to manage all the things themselves. The employees are perplexed about yet another thing.
"Chief Secretary in a press conference had said that full pay of one month would be given to the employees who carry out the poll duty. The announcement was not followed by the issuance of a government order and as such there is suspense over the matter. As on date we don't know whether the announcement about payment of extra one month salary would be reality or not," said the employees.
The employees acknowledged the fact that announcement of one month extra salary attracted the employees to join the polling duty. They said that if the announcement is not fulfilled then it will be difficult for the people to involve government employees for polling duties in future.
