JAMMU, Oct 21: In clear violation of official ban, medical representatives (salesman) of the private pharmaceutical companies continue visiting Out-patient Department (OPD) chambers of the doctors during duty hours but nothing seems moving to stop the banned practice.
It is pertinent to mention that, in 2015 state government had imposed a complete ban on the entry of the medical representatives in the Government Medical Colleges, its associated hospitals, and others hospitals during duty hours in the interest of patient care but the administration had failed to enforce the order strictly.
A senior doctor of the GMC Jammu told Early Times that despite ban, medical representatives can be seen roaming in the hospital and meeting with doctors during working hours every day. The salesmen of the private pharmaceutical companies cajole and also lure doctors into prescribing their brands.
"Some of the pharmaceutical companies gave hefty commission and lavish gifts to government doctors.
Attending medical conferences with family in various locales is the in-thing. While the conferences are sponsored events, many doctors get some companies to sponsor their entire trip. Tickets, stay and local tours are all arranged for in a package, "he added.
It has also been seen that while patients in long queues are waiting outside, doctors carry on with their meet with medical representatives to know their brands. The medicines of private companies are available at the particular medical shops, he informed. He further added that the patients often complain of not getting medicines from some pharmacies and doctors prescribing medicines which are available only with a few chemists.
When contacted Principal Secretary Health and Medical Education Department Jammu and Kashmir, Atul Dulloo said he will look into the matter and required directions will be passed on.
