Mehbooba's crocodile tears
Omkar Dattatray10/21/2018 10:55:14 PM
It is not for nothing that president of PDP and Ex-CM of the state is shedding crocodile tears on the death of militants. By doing so, she addresses her constituency in Kashmir. Kashmir centric political satraps and political parties are habitual of issuing controversial statements to surcharge already sensitive political atmosphere of the restive Jammu and Kashmir state. They are adept in emotionalizing the situations to gain sympathy of the innocent Kashmiri masses. The PDP president has also mastered the art of blackmailing centre government for its selfish political interests. Mehbooba gives controversial statements which connotes pro-separatist meanings. When in power the regional political leaders of PDP and NC swear by Indian and stand by India and out of power they speak the language of Separatists. Mehbooba Mufti has soft approach towards militants, separatists and wants talks to be held with separatist leaders and with Pakistan to end the Kashmir impasse. She never talks tough for militants and it is alleged that she has wept on the death of the militant Burhan Wani and she repeated same exercise of inciting passions and emotions on the recent killing of the scholar turned Hisbul Mujahidden militant commander Bashir mannan wani and she has wept on the death of this much wanted militant. Earlier, she has emotionalized the atmosphere when BJP withdrew support to PDP led coalition government in June 2018. At that time, she had equated PDP's coalition with BJP akin to drinking cup of poison. In fact, tears roll down the eyes of Mehbooba on the death of militants and she condemns the killing of militants saying that there killing is a great loss to the state. Isn't it a pro-militant stance of Mehbooba Mufti. If not, what then? In this way, she glorifies the militants and eulogizes the militant's rank and file. She is in fact shedding crocodile tears on the death of the militants and if she has real sympathy with the militants, she should exhort them to leave the wrong and anti-national path and counsel and then only there will be takers for her tears. Otherwise people are shrewd enough and see the tear politics of Mehbooba mufti. Shedding tears and showing lip sympathy with the slain militants is the political tool of PDP and its President. It is resorted in order to gain sympathy of the gullible masses of the state read Kashmir and to revive the lost space of PDP due to party's alliance with BJP. And thus the tear politics seems to be the tactic to gain the lost space and vacuum in Kashmir and thus she takes recourse to tear politics and emotional blackmail to gain brownie points in the murkier field of politics. The reason behind crocodile tears and sensationalism is the revival of the mass base of the party in Kashmir and again become a force to reckon with and to face the archrival NC in the assembly elections whenever held after the governor's rule. Therefore, PDP supremo is using the tear politics and talking in the language of separatists and advocating dialogue with all stake holders within and without, not paying any heed to the central government's policy that talks and terrorism cannot go together. Instead of shedding crocodile tears, it is good for the PDP President to advise militant leaders to shun the path of violence and come to the negotiating table and lead a meaningful life and contribute to nation building. She only criticizes the so called muscular policy of the central government without bothering that it is the militants who are responsible for their own death as they choose the path of violence and extremism which have no place in today's democratic and civilized world. So it is good for Mehbooba muflti, her party PDP and the common and gullible masses of Kashmir that she should counsel the militant leaders to abjure violence and join national mainstream and then and then only her tears are real. Otherwise, her tears on the killings of militants amount to hoodwinking innocent masses of Kashmir. True it is the precious human life which is lost if a militant or a security force personnel is killed and all the right thinking people should have sympathy with the families of those killed whether a militant or a man in uniform. But then militants are no innocents and they deserve severe punishment and their death should not be condemned and the politicians should desist from glorifying militants and making them heroes and role models. A distinct line should be drawn between the death of a militant and a civilian. While the militants deserve punishment, the civilians should not be harassed but the civilians are duty bound not to resort to street protests and stone pelting upon security forces on the death of the militants. Governor S.P Malik has recently said that we have to fight militancy and not militants but it is idealistic statement because it is not possible to kill militancy without killing militants. Weeping is in the nature of a woman and besides being the supremo of PDP, Mehbooba mufti is a woman and thus she comes into emotions on the death of the militants which she should avoid for the good of the state. But there is some inherent reason in shedding crocodile tears by Mufti and thus she takes recourse of tear politics in order to regain the lost political space of the party. While in office she has said that youth are on the streets not for toffees meaning thereby that the youth deserve to be punished and controlled. But out of power, she is criticizing the central government and security forces for fighting militants and killing them. She exhorts the state political parties, civil society members and those who matter to unite and to prevail upon the central government to start a dialogue with all the stake holders and Pakistan. However, she never counsels the militants to shun the destructive path of violence and gun. Thus, without shedding crocodile tears, Mehbooba should use her influence, party and energy to advice the misguided and radicalized youth to join the national mainstream and not resort to emotional tactics and blackmailing. Even her archrival Omar Abdullah has criticized her and said that her crocodile tears cannot work. So, instead of weeping on the death of the militants, she should use her influence in de-radicalizing youth and encourage them to join national mainstream.
