Early Times Report

Srinagar, Nov 5: After generating more than Rs 16 crore on account of examination fee from students appearing in different examinations, the J&K Board of School Education (BOSE) has miserably failed to even hire gensets and gas heaters for the candidates appearing for various board exams across Kashmir valley.
Details available with Early Times reveal that J&K State Board of School Education (BOSE) has generated a whooping amount of Rs 16.80 crores from students appearing for XII , X , VIII and other exams, but the candidates are made to shiver in the exam halls which lack any heating arrangements. The exam centers also have no electricity supply with the result candidates who appear for the exams had to write the exams under candles and solar lanterns. The pictures of these exam centers had gone viral on the social media during last few days.
Information provide under J&K RTI Act 2009 by the Directorate of School Education Kashmir has also revealed that 70 to 80 % Government schools in Kashmir valley have no electric supply. The reply provided by Chief Education Officer (CEO) Budgam reveals that 1036 Government schools out of 1278 Govt schools have no electricity connection at all. This means more than 80 % schools have no electricity.
" It is an irony that 70 to 80 % schools have no electricity in Kashmir valley and on the other hand Govt is claiming that computer education is being imparted to students in Govt schools , how is this possible ? During the months of June , July and August when temperature crosses 30 degrees in Kashmir valley the students in most of the schools start sweating as there are no fans in the class rooms but how can fans work without electricity," questions Khushid Ahmad Sanoori a social activist
Sources have told Early Times that there are hundreds of government schools in Kupwara, Bandipora, Baramulla, Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian and other districts which are un-electrified and have no washrooms.
" A gas heater or genset can be hired on rent by BOSE authorities during the exam days for a meager amount as days are very short in winters and it gets dark after 4 pm especially in cloudy winter days, but they instead hire taxis and luxury cars for their staff and spend not even 20 % of the revenue for welfare of exam going students. We will be seeking Judicial intervention on this issue soon," said Syed Nasarullah Chairman JK Peoples Forum a Srinagar based NGO.
