Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 5: The gruesome murder of senior BJP leader Anil Parihar and his brother Ajeet Parihar on Thursday evening in the sensitive and strategically located Kishtwar has alarmed the country in general and the minority community in the Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban districts in particular. The manner in which terrorists gunned down the Parihar brothers has made the people of these areas realize that the days are not far when they would witness a situation similar to what it prevailed in the early 1990.
In the early 1990s, the terrorists had targeted members of the minority communities. They had not even spared the marriage parties.
The spurt in terrorist activities in the Doda, Kishtwar and Bhaderwah areas had led to migration of many. It was only after the Doda Bachao Andolan and formation of the Village Defence Committees that a sense of security prevailed in the areas and all those who had migrated returned to their homes and hearths. Thereafter, the minorities held their ground firmly and gave a befitting reply to the terrorists. However, the areas continued to witness terror-related activities at regular intervals but these activities didn't deter the members of the minority communities.
The brutal murder of the Parihar brothers, who were an asset in the area and who were known for their nationalistic credentials, has changed the whole scenario. The members of the minority communities on Friday openly said that the Parihar brothers were murdered with a motive: Create sense of fear in the area and cause migration of the minority community.
What happened at the Kishtwar cremation ground on Friday was a clear indication that the minority community was feeling unsafe and insecure as the BJP after showing a great performance in the 2014 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections had abandoned them and left them to the care of God and anarchy. Not only Kishtwar was on the boil. The whole of Jammu province was on the boil with the people in Kathua, Hiranagar, Samba, RS Pura, Jammu, Akhnoor, Udhampur, Reasi, Katra, Rajouri, Batote, Doda, Bhaderwah, Ramban, Thathri, Prem Nagar, to mention only a few, holding massive protest demonstrations and demanding stringent action against those responsible for the gruesome murder of Parihar brothers.
However, it was at the Kishtwar cremation ground where the BJP leaders witnessed the wrath of the aggrieved minority community, which demanded deployment of army in the area on a permanent basis so that they could lead a peaceful and secure life. The law and order authorities had to spend much of Friday trying to pacify the agitating people and agitating mourners. "Aap ne kis ke bharose per hamei yahan chhora hai…Jahan hamei chun chun kar mara ja raha hai, aap log kya kar rahe ho (Who have you deployed to protect us; they are being singled out and murdered in cold-blood; what are you doing?", many of them were quoted as saying. They were shouting slogans both against the Prime Minister and MoS in PMO and all the BJP leaders, who had gone to Kishtwar to pay tributes to the Parihar brothers. The police had to intervene to protect them from the people's wrath. Most of the people were of the view that adequate number of jawans should be deployed in volatile areas on a permanent basis".
Kishtwar is a sensitive district adjoining Kashmir. It would be only in the fitness of things if an effective law and order machinery is put in place otherwise the results could be disastrous. Nation can't afford Kashmir-like situation anywhere in Jammu province.
