BJP candidates beaten by goons, abstain from voting
Murky affairs in municipal elections
11/21/2018 11:27:28 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 21: The murky affairs in the recently held elections of Municipal Committees became apparent when three councillors of the BJP were beaten up by some goons to stop them from participating in the polls.
It was strange that no action was initiated by the BJP high command against the councillors as well as no FIR was registered against the goons who had beaten their counsellors.
The issue came to fore in RS Pura tehsil of Jammu district, which has a total of 13 wards, out of which six candidates of BJP had won, and it was obvious that the BJP candidate would win the seat of chairman.
"A BJP councillor projected himself for the post of chairman according to the choice of the local leadership. He had support of three party candidates and two independent candidates. He was sure to become the chairman, but some of the top leaders thought otherwise and tried to project another councillor for the post of chairman", sources said.
Sources said that sensing some trouble from local party leadership, the BJP councillor along with two of its own party counsellors and independent candidates went into hiding.
"They probably moved to Punjab and decided to return only a day before the voting for the post of chairman", sources said, adding that when they returned, they were caught by some of goons who brutally beat them up.
"Some of them were so badly beaten up and threatened to not turn up for the voting on the election day", sources said, adding that the BJP counsellors were so scared that few of them didn't turn up on the voting day.
The BJP won the post of chairman as well as vice-chairman but not by getting all the votes of its own counsellors but of two independent candidates. "Some councillors of BJP refrained from voting on the election day", sources said, adding that though local leadership was aware of the entire matter, no action was taken against the counsellors who desisted from voting.
Shockingly, no FIR was also lodged against the goons who had beaten the BJP counsellors, and from all these developments, it could be concluded that BJP leadership as well as the counsellors were well aware of the goons and the forces behind their beating.
"These counsellors who were beaten up had been mooting options to leave the party and join some other", sources said, adding that since the day, they have been beaten up they have not been making their appearance in the public due to circulation of the news across the town.
