KVK Reasi celebrates Kissan Diwas

Jammu, Dec 23: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu (SKUAST-J) celebrated Kissan Diwas(National Farmers Day) here today at Village Talwara in Pouni block of Reasi district in J&K which was attended by a large number of farmers of the area.
The programme was organised under the guidance and supervision of Associate Director Extension and Incharge of KVKs of SKUAST-J, Dr.R.K.Arora. The programme was inaugurated by Dr.Banarsi Lal, Scientist and Head of KVK, Reasi with the warm welcome of the participants. He briefed about the significance of the Kisan Diwas and highlighted the extraordinary contribution of farmers in the national development.
He said that every year Kisan Diwas (National Farmers Day) is observed on 23rd of December to mark the birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister of India Choudhary Charan Singh who hailed from the farming community. He said that Choudhary Charan Singh introduced many policies to improve the lives of the Indian farmers. He added that Choudhary Charan Singh took various initiatives for the welfare of the farmers and united the farmers' community against the landlords and money lenders across the nation.
He narrated that Choudhary Charan Singh is credited to formulate and implement the Zamindari Abolition Act. Kisan Diwas is celebrated to recognize his valuable services rendered to the farmers of the country. He further added that there is need of strenuous efforts to bring a positive change in the knowledge, attitude and skills of the farmers by providing training and technical advice and also assisting them in taking decisions in adoption of new agricultural technologies. He educated the farmers on various state and central agricultural and allied sectors schemes ongoing in the district.
He guided the farmers to form the Farmers Producer Organizations' (FPOs)/farmers clubs and start the micro-entreneurships in the rural areas so that their socio-economic condition can be improved. He stressed on efficient marketing management for the benefits of the farmers. He also guided the farmers for mushroom cultivation, dairy farming, floriculture beekeeping, fruit and vegetables processing, sericulture etc.
