Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 27: A workshop on the use of Handmade Paper was held in DPS Nagbani and the objective of this workshop was to aware the students about the growing concern around the globe for preserving our forest reserves and to stop deforestation. The 'Green House Effect' has led people to become more alert about the environment.
The paper making process uses energy, water and chemicals and produces waste. Paper made from recycled fibres or handmade paper requires atleast 50% less energy and upto 75% less water than making it from virgin fibre. It also produces upto 90% less waste water and reduces air pollution by 70%.
There is a revival in homemade paper making crafts. It is a good way to recycle waste into wonderful possibilities. Handmade paper is environment friendly as waste products are converted into something meaningful by recycling. This leads to less deforestation. Handmade paper is a unique look and texture that sets it apart from machine made paper. The beauty of handmade is that no two sheets are alike. Handmade paper has a rich texture making it perfect for drawing and writing. Handmade paper making is a tradition that is thousands of years old.
Paper making was a part of India's diverse handicrafts industry and Indians have been reusing the paper form long before. The workshop provided an excellent opportunity to learn a new skill with a name to revive India's rich History with this craft. The workshop was conducted by the Art teacher Neha Mahjan. She concluded the workshop saying that almost all the paper is manufactured using industrial machinery, while handmade paper today is surviving as a specialized craft and a medium of artistic expression. After discussing the unique properties of handmade paper she also discussed the process of making handmade paper.
The Principal of the School R. K. Verma appreciated the efforts of the teacher and said that the students of all age group are welcome with no prior experience to participate in the activities conducted during the workshop. All that is required is their creative bent of mind and willingness to learn.
