Mehbooba on offensive, BJP on defensive
12,000 FIRs withdrawn
1/15/2019 11:03:35 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 15: Former CM and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti has unleashed a no-holds-barred campaign to woo the Kashmiri voters and hurt the BJP's poll prospects in Jammu province and Ladakh.
The BJP has no say and no support-base whatsoever in Kashmir as its demography is different from that of Jammu and Ladakh. There is no taker for the BJP's oft-repeated claim that it has lakhs and lakhs of members in the Kashmir Valley. The performance of the BJP in the 2014 Assembly elections in Kashmir proved that.
One can't say if the campaign unleashed by Mehbooba Mufti would benefit her and her party in Kashmir where the NC is also putting in all efforts to improve its poll prospects by exposing what it calls the misdeeds of the PDP-BJP coalition government, but one thing is certain that her campaign has all the potential of marring the poll prospects of the BJP in Jammu province, which gave it 25 Assembly seats and 2 Lok Sabha seats in 2014.
Mehbooba Mufti has been patting her back day in and day out saying that she had "12,000 FIRs withdrawn, registered during the NC-Congress regime" (2009-2014); that "she made the BJP Government at the Centre to announce one-month ceasefire"; that "she didn't compromise on the Kathua case"; that she "got two BJP ministers dropped and didn't hand over the case to CBI as I had apprehensions that it (Kathua case) will meet the same fate as the Shopian case" (alleged rape and murder of two women in 2009); that "she got FIRs registered against Army and security forces"; and so on.
What Mehbooba Mufti has been saying seems correct. That's the reason the BJP has not even once dared to counter Mehbooba Mufti's claims or contest what she has been saying. Instead, the BJP is raking up non-political issues ranging from tourism development to Roshni Act. The BJP will have to face the consequences if it failed to counter Mehbooba Mufti and her claims. It would commit political suicide if it continued to take the people of Jammu for a ride. Things in Jammu have changed to a considerable extent and much water has flown down the River Tawi.
