| Agriculture Deptt extends support to farmers | | |  Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 16: With the efforts of J&K State Agriculture Department in general and field functionaries of Zone Bhalwal in particular a good example of the diversification strategy is provided by progressive farmer Attar Singh of Panchayat Gharota zone Bhalwal. Despite having a huge land holding it was very difficult for Attar Singh to get good returns because of the lack of assured irrigation. Due to the regular crop failures and low farm income he had even thought of leaving agriculture aside. It was nearly impossible for him to let his both ends meet because of the marginal returns from agriculture sector. With the installation of bore well in this particular area, a sea change in the socio economic condition of the farmer is noticed within a short span of time. The farmer involved himself in the various allied agricultural activities such as dairying, multiple cropping and vegetable growing because of the assured source of irrigation available to him. The involvement of this particular farmer in seasonal vegetable cultivation on more than 2 Ha. of land has helped him to earn good profits throughout the year. Because of good returns he has also adopted mechanization in agriculture by procuring farm machinery and implements. The support and guidance provided by the Department of Agriculture encouraged the farmer to go for Vermicomposting and Pisciculture (Fish farming) hereby making the best use of water provided through the bore well dug by him with the support/subsidy of Deptt of Agriculture. |
