Early Times Report

KUPWARA, Feb 14: Fresh snowfall in the valley has led to the service breakdown in some of the areas in Trehgam block of Kupwara district and snapped electricity and badly damaged orchards somewhere in the area.
Most of the rural areas of this frontier district reel under darkness as the authorities have failed to set right the damaged power lines and electric poles, said sources.
According to sources dozens of villages in Trehgam Kupwara area including Chandigam, Chowkibal, Awoora, Hatmulla, Gagal, Bramri, Khumriyal, Farkan and Gugloosa are without power supply from past many days.
They said that we have not seen the electricity from past many days in various villages of Trehgam area, the electric wires had fallen down due to snow fall and that are yet to be set right in some villages of the area, said locals.
Most households in the area are now metered but that has changed nothing. The promised uninterrupted power supply to these areas remains an illusion, especially during these wintering days, sources informed to early times.
The situation is agonizing particularly for some consumers who have either volunteered or readily agreed to have digital meters installed in their houses, and we are regularly paying our monthly tariffs.
The power theft by some consumers may be one of the reasons for load shedding but that does not mean that other households will suffer because of some selfish elements or inhabitants, locals said.
Despite the fact that we have many power projects in Kashmir but still we remains in darkness due to the laziness of the department concerned, adding some orchards have been also badly damaged due to recent snowfall, local said.
The power curtailment gives tough time to the students to prepare for some competitive examinations, and department of PDD is requested to look into the matter; they should take action against the people who are not paying their bills in time, said sources.
