2/19/2019 11:40:34 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 19: Curfew was relaxed in phased manner on Tuesday in Jammu city as authorities said no untoward incident occurred anywhere during the relaxation period.
Authorities relaxed curfew for two hours from 11.30 a.m to 1.30 p.m. at areas falling under PS Peer Mitha, City Chowk and Nawabad in City's North sub division.
District Magistrate Jammu-Ramesh Kumar said curfew was relaxed from 3 p.m to 5 p.m in Bakshi Nagar, Pacca Danga, Janipur and Bus Stand areas, and from 3.30 p.m to 7 p.m in Jammu South areas under the jurisdiction of Gandhi Nagar, Bagh-e-Bahu, Satwari, Channi Himmat, Gangyal and Trikuta Nagar police stations.
The District Magistrate said the decision with regards to curfew restrictions would be taken on Wednesday at 8 a.m after fresh review of the law and order situation.
Meanwhile, Internet (2G) Service was restored in the Jammu province except Jammu district during late hours.
All the UG and PG examinations, CBCS (Minor examinations), Course work examinations of M.Phil & Ph.D to be conducted on 20th & 21st February 2019 (Wednesday & Thursday) stand postponed due to unavoidable circumstances and fresh date shall be notified later on while functioning of the University of Jammu shall remain suspended on February 20, 2019 (Wednesday), said official spokesperson of University of Jammu.
The examination of Class 8th and 9th scheduled to be held on February 20, 2019 has been postponed. Director School Education Jammu-Anuradha Gupta stated that the exams have been postponed in Jammu district only. The exam will be conducted throughout the Jammu province as per the schedule, she added.
Authorities had imposed curfew in Jammu district on February 15 after unruly mobs torched and damaged several vehicles.
Soon after policemen deployed in the curfew-bound areas announced relaxation through the public address system, people heaved a sigh of relief and thronged markets to buy essential commodities.
Long queues of customers were witnessed at petrol pumps, domestic gas outlets, vegetable and wholesale markets and people were seen buying items of daily use.
"The response of the people is good and wherever there was shortage of essential commodities clear cut directions have been given to meet the demand of the people. The ATMs were made functional and gas cylinders and ration were also made available so that the people could not face any problem," Kumar said.
He asked people not to pay heed to the rumours and said strict action was being taken against rumour mongers.
"The cyber cell of police is performing its duties and people (spreading rumours or inciting hatred by their posts on social media) have been identified. An investigation is underway and some arrests have also been made," Kumar said.
"Nobody will be allowed to misuse social media and harm communal harmony," he said.
Ajay Kumar, a resident of old city, said the relaxation came as a great relief as the people faced a lot of problems due to the continued curfew over the past four days.
"We were running short of essential commodities and could not provide milk to the children," he said while buying fresh vegetables at a market.
Kishore Sharma, another local resident, prayed for early restoration of peace and said, "Jammuites are living in communal harmony and does not believe in violence."
However, he said the recent terror attack in Kashmir was the most brutal act and demanded appropriate action against the perpetrators of the incident.
