Sopore encounter: Two militants killed; arms, ammunition recovered

BARAMULLA, Feb 22: Two militants were killed in an encounter that erupted between militants and security forces in Warpora village of Sopore town in this north Kashmir district on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.
Based on a credible input about the presence of militants in Warpora area of North Kashmir's Sopore district, a cordon and search operation was launched jointly by Police and security forces in the area.
As the searches were going on, the search party was fired upon by the terrorists. The fire was retaliated leading to a gunfight and in the ensuing encounter, 2 militants were killed and the bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter. Their identities and affiliations are being ascertained.
Incriminating material including arms and ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter. Police has registered a case and initiated investigation in the matter, said police statement.
Meanwhile Superinten-dent of Police (SP) Sopore, Javid Iqbal confirmed to Early Times that, bodies of two unidentified militants have been retrieved, and 2 AK-47 rifles have been recovered.
"Encounter is over, search operation is still on in the area", said SP Sopore.
In view of the apprehension of law and order problem, the Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Sopore had imposed Section 144 of the CrPC in Sopore last night and the internet services were also suspended in the Sopore town.
However sources said that, the encounter broke out on Thursday late evening after Army's 22 RR, and SOG launched a cordon and search operation in Astan Mohalla of Warpora village in Sopore town.
Clashes erupted between protesters and security forces near the site of encounter at Warpora village of Sopore town today, said sources.
They said that there are unconfirmed reports that two JeM militants were killed in an encounter in Warpora area, a house was also damaged where these militants were hidings.
